In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain— was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and—in rhythmic terms—contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, ‘Decades of Suffering’, echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This ‘Chain of Freedom’ is depicted in the final movement of the work.

De Baltische Weg (The Baltic Way) was een demonstratie van de bevolking van de Baltische staten die in 1989 plaatsvond als een roep om onafhankelijkheid van de Sovjet-Unie. Deze historische gebeurtenis vormde de inspiratiebron voor deze compositie. Van Vilnius via Riga naar Tallinn werd een zeshonderd kilometer lange keten van naar schatting twee miljoen mensen gevormd. Op 23 augustus 1989 gaven al die mensen elkaar de hand en werd De Baltische Weg de langste menselijke keten ooit. Het bleek de uiteindelijke opmaat tot de zo gewenste onafhankelijkheid. De inleiding van het eerste deel, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is gebaseerd op een nocturne voor piano van devooraanstaande Litouwse componist en kunstschilder Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911). Het thematische materiaal van deze nocturne is door de hele compositie heen verwerkt. Na het melancholische begin volgt een krachtig thema, waarmee de strijdbaarheid van de Baltische bevolking wordt uitgebeeld. In het streven naar onafhankelijkheid worden plannen gemaakt om als vreedzaam protest tegen de onderdrukking een menselijke keten te vormen over de wegen van de Baltische staten Litouwen, Letland en Estland. Deze ‘Chain of Freedom’ wordt in het laatste deel van het werk muzikaal weergegeven.

August 1989 bildeten rund zwei Millionen Teilnehmer eine sechshundert Kilometer lange Menschenkette, die von der estnischen Hauptstadt Tallinn über das lettische Riga bis zur litauischen Hauptstadt Vilnius reichte. Die längste Menschenkette, die jemals geschaffen wurde, erwies sich als der letzte Schritt, der zur lang ersehnten Unabhängigkeit führte. Dieses historische Ereignis diente der Komposition alsInspirationsquelle. En 1989, la manifestation nommée « La Voie balte » (The Baltic Way) s’est tenue en Estonie, en Lettonie et en Lituanie, les pays baltes dont les citoyens demandaient être indépendants de l’Union soviétique. Le deuxième mouvement, « Decades of Suffering », dépeint la vie sous le joug de l’Union soviétique. la recherche de l’indépendance, une manifestation pacifique est organisée sous la forme d’une chaîne humaine traversant les trois pays baltes l ’Estonie, la Lettonie et la Lituanie. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic.
Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  .

This intense and emotional work was commissioned by the Indiana Music Educators Association and was premiered at the 2011 IMEA Convention with the composer conducting. Written as a gift to longtime friend of music education, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, the piece is basically lyrical in nature with beautiful lines and colors. A brief faster section, in the words of the composer, “describes that uncomfortable time when we are desperately trying to find ourselves.” The piece ends on a solemn yet reaffirming note, reminding us of the importance of guides and mentors along life's pathway. The Legend of Celobrium (“La légende de Celobrium”) est une œuvre de commande pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Soleuvre au Luxembourg l’occasion de la célébration de son centenaire, en 2007.Celobrium est le nom donné par les Romains la ville de Soleuvre (Zolwer en luxembourgeois ou Zolver en allemand). Avant de partir, elle jeta son or et ses précieux joyaux dans un puits profond du ch teau.Le voyage fut long et difficile. force de ténacité, ils réussirent se mettre en sécurité au sommet d’une colline avoisinante. Ils s’y installèrent et érigèrent un nouveau ch teau, le ch teau de Differdange.Les siècles passèrent et le ch teau du Zolwerknapp n’était plus qu’un amas de ruines. Jamais personne n’avait osé y chercher le trésor qui sommeillait dans les profondeurs du puits. Mais un jour, le prêtre local réussit persuader sept hommes braves de descendre au fond de l’obscur goulot pour récupérer l’or. About Suzuki Method

The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education. The important elements of the Suzuki approach to instrumental teaching include the following:an early start (aged 3-4 is normal in most countries); the importance of listening to music; learning to play before learning to read; -the involvement of the parent; a nurturing and positive learning environment; a high standard of teaching by trained teachers; the importance of producing a good sound in a balanced and natural way; core repertoire, used by Suzuki students across the world; social interaction with other children. The theory that the earth was round urged Columbus to try and reach Asia by sailing west. A truly exotic work that grasps the drive and excitement of the world’s greatest explorer.

Jan de Haan schreef Hispaniola ter gelegenheid van het vijfhonderdste sterfjaar van Christoffel Columbus (1451-1506), die in 1492 Amerika ontdekte. Een van de eerste eilanden die hij aantrof in de Caribische zee noemde hijLa Española - in het Latijn ‘Hispaniola’. Het werk bestaat uit drie aaneengesloten delen. In deel een wordt de voorbereiding van de reis weerspiegeld, steeds afgewisseld door een ontspannen Spaanse sfeer. Het snelle tweede deel beschrijftmet vele ritmische verrassingen de onvoorspelbare zeereis. Als de scheepsbel heeft geklonken, begint het derde deel. Tijdens het breed uitgesponnen thema lijkt de kust uit zee te rijzen, waarna de euforie vanwege de ontdekkingvan het nieuwe land uitmondt in een muzikale climax.

Jan de Haan a composé Hispaniola pour célébrer le 500e anniversaire de la mort de Christophe Colomb (1451-1506). Né en Italie, le jeune Christophe Colomb s’installa Lisbonne. De l , il entreprit ses voyages découverte vers l’Afrique et ailleurs. Adhérent la thèse que la Terre est ronde, il décida de rejoindre l’Asie (Les Indes orientales) en navigant par l’Ouest. En 1492, il embarqua avec une petite flotte battant pavillon espagnol. Après deux mois de navigation, il découvrit les premières îles dans la mer des Cara bes. Persuadé d'avoir atteint l'Asie, Colomb baptisa ces nouvelles terres « Les Indes » et les hommes qui les peuplent « les Indiens ». Étonné par laressemblance de certains paysages avec l'Espagne, il donna le nom d'Española (Petite Espagne) l’une des îles (aujourd’hui Ha ti et la République dominicaine). Ce nom fut ensuite latinisé en Hispaniola.Hispaniola est une œuvre en trois mouvements sans interruption. Le premier mouvement illustre la préparation du voyage. La précision qui caractérise la musique alterne de manière répétitive avec la décontraction d’une atmosphère typiquement espagnole. Le deuxième mouvement d’allure vive est rempli de surprises rythmiques. Nous suivons Colomb dans son long, imprévisible et dangereux périple en mer. Terre en vue !, la cloche du bateau s’ébranle. Nous entrons dans le troisième mouvement. Durant la longue exposition du thème, les côtes semblent s’élever lentement de la mer. Puis vient l’euphorie de la découverte de la nouvelle terre. Finalement, la musique rayonne dans une intensité lumineuse.

About Suzuki Method

The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education.
