“Tek Kapidan†is a Turkish folk song in which the choir shares a young girl's musings about her boyfriend, who was killed in an accident. She reminisces about their past times together and wishes for the old days when they were together. She says how much more important being with him was than the material things in life. Sopranos and altos alternate solo sections with the tenors and basses in this arrangement.

En 1918, il épouse Linda Lee Thomas. Le couple partage sa vie entre Paris, Venise, New York et Hollywood où Cole Porter se consacre la composition de musiques de films. Le mariage est heureux en dépit de l’homosexualité notoire de Cole Porter. En 1937, il est victime d’un grave accident qui le laisse handicapé vie. Cole Porter restera meurtri par cette expérience. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice s’éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours. Il suffit d’évoquer I’ve Got You Under My Skin ou Every Time We Say Goodbye. Sa musique a été reprise par de nombreux artistes : des crooners et grandes vedettes du jazz telles que Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald et Oscar Peterson aux cantatrices Renée Fleming et Kiri Te Kanawa. For Bob is arranged for Cello and Piano. First performed by Elisabeth Smalt and Kevin Volans, London 2016. Composers Note: I have no idea where this piece came from and how it is structured. But before and after I wrote it I was nagged by the question: what does the viola have to do with the piano? Did this combination evolve by unfortunate accident? The viola was perfected in the 18th century. Its natural metier is (private) chamber music. The piano on the other hand kept growing and blossomed in the 19th century as the ultimate public instrument. If the piano is to play with the viola, it has to rein back its power and pose as an accompanist. Maybe a third instrument, perhaps from the 20th century, is needed to mediate between these two very different sound worlds. So whenwe play this 'trio' with 2 instruments I invite the listener to mentally add the silent part(ner). - Kevin Volans.

‘No Man’s Land’ was commissioned by the ‘Noordlimburgse Brass Band’. Thierry Deleruyelle has written this work in 2018, 100 years after the end of World War 1. This work is related to his first work written for brass band, Fraternity, which tells the story about the mining accident in Courières, France. Countries such as Belgium and Germany helped France. Eight years later World War 1 broke out. Instead of helping each other, no man’s land arose.No Man’s Land werd geschreven in opdracht van de ‘Noordlimburgse Brass Band’ uit België. Thierry Deleruyelle schreef dit werk in 2018, exact 100 jaar na het einde van Wereldoorlog 1. Het idee achter dit werk sluit aan bij zijn allereerste werk voor brassband, Fraternity, dat verhaalt over de mijnramp in Courrières, Frankrijk. Daarbij kregen ze enorm veel hulp en steun van buurlanden België en Duitsland. Acht jaar later brak Wereldoorlog 1 uit. In plaats van elkaar te helpen ontstond er een Niemandsland.No Man’s Land wurde von der Noordlimburgse Brass Band in Auftrag gegeben. Thierry Deleruyelle schrieb das Werk im Jahr 2018 - 100 Jahre nach dem Ende des ersten Weltkrieges. Es ist mit seinem ersten Werk für Brass Band - Fraternity - verwandt, das die Geschichte eines Minenunfalls in Courières, Frankreich, erzählt. Länder wie Belgien und Deutschland halfen Frankreich. TINY TATTOO was written after the composer visited a “treetop†bistro at Big Sur, California. The restaurant is named Nepenthe, after an ancient Greek elixir fabled to relieve any and all sorrows. This spot-on-the-cliff made such an impression on Pann that musical ideas immediately started flowing, giving rise to the opening hook of this 5-minute orchestral work. Written as a gift to conductor Alastair Willis, TINY TATTOO is a highly catchy and colorful work with exciting percussion parts, equally suitable for advanced student orchestras, professional ensembles, and everything in between.TINY TATTOO (2017) was written after visiting a “treetop†bistro at Big Sur, California with my wife after driving the entire day up from L.A. The restaurant is called “Nepenthe,†named after an ancient Greek elixir fabled to relieve one from any and all sorrows. This spot-on-the-cliff made such an impression on me (in my exhausted state) that I immediately began humming the opening minimal hook in what is now this piece.
