These five part-songs were composed over ten years from 1903 to 1913, but only the first was published in the composer's lifetime. Bridge's early works - those written before the first World War - were more late Romantic in style, warmly expansive, than his mature works. These songs display Bridge's skill and craftsmanship.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respected conductor, violist and teacher - his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, based on a theme from one of Bridge's pieces for String quartet.

Composed in 1981, this work is a setting of a sequence from the Mass for the Feast of St Thomas, found in the missal of the Hereford use. The text is a conventional hymn of praise but it is distinguished by a lively and attractive rhythm, and as this rhythm would have been lost in translation, I have set it in the original Latin. The work is in the form of theme and variations and is characterised by a gradual crescendo throughout. It begins very quietly with solo timpani and then the choir sing the theme in unison, unaccompanied by flutes, bells, timpani and lower strings.

This substantial choral work was completed in 1970. Its succinct and atmospheric text is based on haiku poetry by Basho and other Japanese poets, in the original and in English translation. Musically it takes the form of a theme and variations with interludes, and looks forward towards the choral style and content of Heininen's Japanese opera, The Damask Drum.

The coal seller is a song for SCTB a cappella by Paul Ladmirault. The song was written with a main theme, two variations and a coda, and features a total of 5 verses. The lyrics remind us of a time when coal sellers came to town to sell merchandise. To be sung a cappella, all in andantino, this song is very lyrical and has some polyphonic aspects and some merismas. Each verse contains different lyrics, all revolving around the coal seller and his life: - Verse 1: this verse settles the action, with the seller trying to sell coal in the city - Verse 2: the seller is asked how much is the cost of a pound of coal - Verse 3: he is asked where his wife is - Verse 4: the beauty of his wife is highlighted - Verse 5: the seller explains why his shirt is so black Paul Ladmirault (1877-1944) was a French composer. He composed numerous pieces including: operas, ballets, orchestral works, chamber music and vocal music..

Laudate Dominum is a charming motet beginning with a calm ostinato bass line. The other voices enter one by one, until the pretty theme in the altos, central idea of the piece, completed with a counterpoint in the sopranos. After a short series of heavenly variations, the middle sections begins, more rhythmic, vigorous and harmonically various. A triumphant repetition of the main theme in the tenors introduces the last part of the piece, initially based on the same material of the first one, but then continuing with a long and expressive Coda that completes the work with bright solemnity.
