The choral ballad Toggenburg op. 76 is based on the legend of the holy Ida von Toggenburg. It enjoyed a great popularity with the public in Rheinberger's day. Just a short time after it was first published in 1874 this work was performed numerous time. The six-movement work is scored alternately for choir, various sized vocal ensembles and soloists. The other works in this volume are of a smaller scale . They are all choral compositions of one movement, although in the case of Die tote Braut op. 81, a solo voice (mezzo soprano) is called for.

In 1884, Josef Rheinberger composed a setting for solo voice and piano of the Christmas poem Morgenstern der finstern Nacht by the mystic Baroque poet Angelus Silesius at the behest of a magazine. 16 years later, he returned to the melody and set it for four-part a cappella choir. Both versions are printed in the choral song sheet. The choral setting - published here for the first time - is a welcome addition to the Christmas repertoire.

His cycles for men's and women's choir, most of which were commissioned works, are contained in two volumes of the Complete Edition (vols. 19 and 20). It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark, arranged as a rhymed libretto with various roles by Franz Bonn (1830-1854). Both of these helped to make the cantata very popular in Rheinberger's days with boys' and girls' choirs. Rheinberger later arranged it with an accompaniment by a small orchestra. This volume contains Rheinberger's choral works with accompaniment which are not ballads. These compositions, some of which are unknown today, merit a rediscovery and offer a wide range of different scorings: Included among them are compositions for mixed voices, for women's choir and men's choir. Most of them can be performed either chorally or with a group of soloists. Rheinberger's romantic-idyllic setting of Eichendorff's Die Nacht op. 56, with the unusual accompaniment of a piano quartet, is very attractive.
