Franz von Suppé fut avec Johann Strauss etKarl Millöcker un des plus éminents représentants de l’ ge d’or de l’opérette classique viennoise.Dans sa version originale, l’opéra-comique Banditenstreiche (1867, Les joyeux bandits) était une œuvre courte en un acte, mais la version de Suppé fut modifiée deux reprises, en 1940 et 1955. D’une composition sans grande prétention, elle devint alors une œuvre d’envergure. En puisant dans le répertoire existant de Suppé, les « arrangeurs » réunirent six pièces originales pour en faire une partition solide et complète. Le résultat final est parfaitement équilibré.Banditenstreiche rassemble tous les traits caractéristiques de Suppé qui ont conquis un large public : une musique originale foisonnant d’idées inattendues ; un style fluide et léger. On y trouve des airs et des passages d’ensemble élégants, quelques authentiques valses viennoises et de belles pages de musique de scène. There are two known manuscript sources for the present edition of this sinfonia avanti l'opera. In the Dean and Chapter Library of Durham Cathedral it appears as the twelfth, and last, piece in a collection of late seventeenth-century Italian instrumental music. No composer is given and identification was only possible following the discovery, in 1993, of a concordant source in the Biblioteca Estense, Modena, where the work appears as the sinfonia to Perti's opera L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta, first performed in Venice as part of the 1690/1 season.It is sometimes hard to ascertain the original functional purpose behind many of the trumpet works written by composers of the Bolognese school as it would appear that some were used as sonate da chiesa, to celebrate mass in the basilica of San Petronio, Bologna, whilst also serving as operatic sinfonie. To confuse the issue further, there are several instances of composers 'borrowing' each other's works: for example, it has recently been discovered that the Torelli trumpet sinfonia a 4 catalogued as G4 in Giegling was used as the overture to Perti's opera Nerone fatto Cesare (1693). So far as the present edition is concerned, however, stylistic considerations would appear to confirm that the work is indeed by Perti and that it was originally conceived as the overture to L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta. A couple of clues hint at a secular raison d'etre: the Durham source is marked Serenatto (presumably a corruption of serenata, a term often used in lieu of sinfonia) and the last movement of the Modena source is marked Menuet, a term more often associated with sonate da camera than with works of ecclesiastical provenance.Both the Modena and Durham sources for the present edition are virtually note-perfect and occasional inaccuracies were easily corrected by comparing the sources with each other and with the part-books in Durham. Whilst the Modena source lacks the second violin part in the outer movements it contains fuller dynamic markings and tempi indications than the Durham source and these have been followed in the present edition with no editorial additions. Notation has been modernised and, in the piano reduction edition, right-hand arpeggio-figurations rendered more pianistic. Parts are provided for trumpet in D and B flat. I am grateful to the Dean and Chapter of Durham and to the Biblioteca Estense, Modena, for providing microfilm of the manuscripts. The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody. Allegretto for flute and piano by Jozef Swider is a work of a great artistic value that comprises a perfect didactic material, filling a gap in the Polish flute literature. Allegretto for flute and piano is a one-part composition of an ABA1 structure with a cadenza. A four-bar piano introduction developsinto the flute part intoning a dance and folk-style melody, which becomes fragmented in terms of rhythm and densified in its facture. The dialogue between the flute and the piano involves mutual motif complementation. The melody gathers momentum (numerous ascending and descending progressions, undulations, typical ties, trills), a dynamic gradation develops into the middle, more peaceful and cantilena-style, part. The culmination, initially outlined by the flute and continued by the piano, leads to the cadenza characterised by considerable performative freedom across motifs in parts A and B, exhibiting the colour and sound values ofthe instrument. The link A1 comprises a quasi-variation development of the first passage of the work; it is the most dynamic,energetic and diversified in terms of the applied sound registers (characteristic alloctava marking), articulation and agogics. Themarking piu vivo in bar 136, combined with irregular metric divisions and shifts in accents, intensified dynamics and expression adds spontaneity, ultimately leading to the work's finale. The application of the minor mode, the economy of expressive means and a changeable course of narration reflect introvert characteristics of the composer a man of outstanding humbleness and modesty, at the same time full of unrest, self-criticism and little faith towards himself, which is confirmed by recently found notes of his.

Die beiden ,,ausseren (I, IV) bzw. die beiden ,,inneren Stucke (II, III) sind jeweils gedanklich und auf der Materialebene eng miteinander verbunden. Dieser Anordnung entspricht die symmetrische Tondisposition der Stucke I und IV, die durch mehrfache Spiegelungen aus einem Allintervallakkord entwickelt ist. Die Stucke II und III versuchen, die Intervallstrukturen nach innen zu kehren und bis zum Cluster einzuebnen. Dementsprechend erstreckt sich die Vielfalt der Ausdrucksebenen vom herausgepressten fff-,,Schrei bis zum zart schwingenden, ins Innere gerichteten ppp-,,Gesang. Die Stucke (sie dauern zwischen einer und ungefahr funf Minuten) stellen so den Versuch dar, in kurzen Formen mit moglichst knappen Formulierungen die Extreme rigoroser Harte einerseits und einer fast anmutigen Leichtigkeit und Zartheit andererseits miteinander in Verbindung zu bringen. Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times Five States of Change is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. As if looking back on his youth toward the end of his life, Richard Strauss wrote a second concerto for horn and orchestra, again in E flat major, around sixty years after his first concerto for horn. This sublimely beautiful late work, which gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss' poor health and the Second World War, was premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the direction of Karl Böhm. It was not until after Strauss� death that the concerto appeared in print in London, making a critical new edition on the basis of the autograph sources and performance material more than overdue. The editor, Hans Pizka, former principal horn of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, learned first-hand about the performance tradition and genesis of the concertoas a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg.

Commisioned by the municipality of Debrecen.Ãkos Zarándy was born in 1982, Budapest. He finished his studies in choir-conducting and in composition under János Vajda and Zoltán Jeney at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In 2009, the first parts of his first opera entitled Las dos Fridas were performed in his diploma concert. In 2011, his symphonic piece entitled Nightmare Symphony was selected and performed within the frame of UMZF, the most important Hungarian composition competition. In 2011, he was among the winners of the one-act opera competition of the National Cultural Fund in Hungary. In 2014 and 2016 he received the Kodály Composer Grant. Zarándy has regularlyparticipated in contemporary music festivals in Hungary (Music of Our Age, Budapest Autumn Festival, Con Spirito, Béla Bartók International Choir Competition, International Bartók Seminar and Festival) and also in abroad (Gaudeamus Music Week, Ostrava Days). Many of his pieces have been performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Turkey, the United States and Mexico.
