The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody.

In einigen Sätzen verwendete Jacob de Haan eine alte indianische Melodie aus Süd-Dakota.1. The Great Spirit (‘Der Große Geist’)Die Kultur der Dakota-Indianer war der irdischen und der spirituellen Welt verbunden. Sie glaubten, dass der Große Geist die Erde schuf, indem er einen schwarzen Ball auf das Wasser warf und dann aus einem zweiten Ball alles Lebendige schuf.2. Buffalo Hunting (‘Büffeljagd’)Auf einen mächtigenBüffel zuzureiten erforderte Können und Mut. Die Männer ergriffen jedoch mit Freude die Chance, sich selbst auf der Jagd zu beweisen.3. Smoking the Pipe (‘Die Pfeife rauchen’)Die Pfeife galt als Friedenssymbol und wurde unter Männern und Stämmen benutzt. Die Pfeife rauchen besiegelte einen Bund des Vertrauens und heilige, Pfeife rauchende Männer nahmen so Kontakt mit dem Großen Geist auf.4. The Ghost Dance (‘Der Geistertanz’)Dieser religiöse Tanz der verlorenen Hoffnung basierte auf Gebet, Tanz und Gesang. Im Jahre 1890 engagierten die Soldaten Geistertänzer an einem Ort namens Wounded Knee.5. Pilgrims at Wounded Knee (‘Pilger am Wounded Knee‘)Die Tragödie von Wounded Knee ist sehr schmerzhaft für die Indianer. Viele pilgern noch immer zu der heiligen, vom Wind verwehten Hügelspitze, auf der so viele Unschuldige den Tod fanden.

Les Indiens Dakota (Sioux) des États américains du Dakota du Nord et du Dakota du Sud sont au centre de cette fresque musicale, dans laquelle Jacob de Haan dépeint certains aspects de leur culture et de leur histoire. Dans plusieurs mouvements de cette œuvre, le compositeur a intégré une mélodie indienne ancienne provenant du Dakota du Sud.1. Le Grand Esprit : la culture des Indiens Dakota était liée la terre et au monde des esprits. Dans leurs croyances, le Grand Esprit avait créé la terre en jetant une balle noire dans l’eau, puis il prit une deuxième balle et créa les êtres vivants. 2. La chasse au bison : courir bride abattue vers un bisonvigoureux nécessitait beaucoup d’adresse et de courage. Pourtant, les hommes attendaient impatiemment l’occasion de pouvoir faire leurs preuves la chasse.3. Fumer le calumet: le calumet était le symbole de la paix. On l’utilisait pour sceller une entente entre les hommes et les nations. Fumer le calumet était un gage de bonne volonté. Et lorsqu’un homme-médecine fumait le calumet, il communiait avec le Grand Esprit. 4. The Ghost Dance (“La Danse des Esprits”) Pour faire renaître l’espoir, les Indiens exécutaient une danse religieuse accompagnée d’incantations et des chants rituels. En 1890 Wounded Knee, l’armée fédérale a ouvert le feu sur tous ceux qui célébraient la Ghost Dance. 5. Les pèlerins de Wounded Knee : la tragédie de Wounded Knee est un moment douloureux dans l’histoire des nations indiennes. Ils sont encore nombreux faire un pèlerinage sur cette colline sacrée, balayée par le vent, où tant d’innocents ont été massacrés.

Il secondo quaderno dedicato alla musica d’insieme è diviso in due parti: la prima comprende partiture classiche da me trascritte per strumenti musicali tradizionali con alcuni interventi dello strumentario Orff, la seconda propone alcune attività di esplorazione sullo strumento, di elaborazione di materiali sonori e di improvvisazione collettiva.
I brani trascritti ed elaborati nella prima parte del quaderno si susseguono secondo un ordine di difficoltà crescente e sono presi dal repertorio colto: dal tardo barocco alla prima metà del Novecento. Le trascrizioni non prevedono organici originali della letteratura cameristica classica: le partiture sono state scritte con intenti principalmente didattici.
La pratica di musica d’insieme, come abbiamo già ricordato presentando Fare musica insieme n. 1, rappresenta un’esperienza fondamentale nella formazione musicale perché abitua lo studente ad ascoltarsi in rapporto agli altri e rende più consapevole e disinvolto il suo rapporto con lo strumento. Con questo secondo quaderno vorremmo però proporci anche un obiettivo più ambizioso: quello di tentare di favorire e stimolare le capacità analitiche, interpretative e anche creative. È per questo che accanto allo studio e all’esecuzione delle partiture vengono qui suggerite anche una serie di esperienze che, sempre partendo dall’ascolto e dalla ‘analisi’ della musica, offrono lo spunto per diverse attività di improvvisazione collettiva e di invenzione musicale.

Il percorso proposto nella seconda parte del quaderno si articola in quattro fasi:

a) L’allievo viene sollecitato in un primo momento a indagare e sperimentare i diversi suoni che riesce ad ottenere con il proprio strumento per poi contribuire a creare, anche con l’aiuto di stimoli extramusicali e sinestesici, situazioni sonore insieme al gruppo.
b) Viene proposta l’elaborazione di nuovi progetti compositivi partendo dalle partiture trascritte nel quaderno: aggiungendo, togliendo, mescolando e modificando gli elementi musicali.
c) Vengono proposte diverse attività di improvvisazione prendendo spunto dai principi costruttivi individuati ascoltando alcuni brani.
d) Si propone di creare situazioni sonore progettando e interpretando grafici inventati a partire dalle analogie strutturali ricavabili osservando le strutture e gli elementi che caratterizzano un quadro, un’architettura, un elemento della natura, ecc.
L’intento è quello di aiutare l’allievo a sviluppare le proprie capacità di comprensione, di interpretazione e di invenzione della musica e nel contempo di favorire una duttilità esecutiva aperta, non irrigidita, creativa.

Mentre il primo quaderno di Fare musica insieme è pensato principalmente per bambini di 8-12 anni, questo prevede invece che l’allievo abbia già acquisito una certa abilità tecnica sullo strumento.
Il quaderno si rivolge soprattutto agli allievi delle scuole di musica e delle scuole medie a indirizzo musicale.

This work in four sections is written for a four-part variable instrumentation together with drums. We start off_x001E_ in the _x001F_first movement on an adventurous safari. In the second and third movements we’re on the hunt for great beasts of Africa, which can also be heard with all their stomping, screeching and yelling. A wonderful musical safari that all musicians and listeners alike will enjoy!

Dit werk voor vierstemmige variabele bezetting met slagwerk beschrijft in vier deeltjes verschillende taferelen van het Afrikaanse continent. In het eerste deel gaan we op safari. In het tweede deel gaan we op zoek naar een olifant, een neushoorn, een luipaard een leeuw en een buffel. Welke reptielen kunnen we ontdekken in het derde deel? En hoe kan het beter stoppen dan met een ‘Monkey Rock’? Tijdens het werk kun je actief verschillende dierengeluiden nabootsen, waardoor je je echt in de jungle waant!

Dieses vierteilige Werk ist für eine vierstimmig variable Besetzung und Schlagzeug instrumentiert. Der Titel spricht schon für sich: In African Scenes spielt der schwarze Kontinent die Hauptrolle. Im ersten Satz starten wir zu einer abenteuerlichen Safari. Im zweiten Teil geht es auf die Suche nach den ‚Big Five’ - den großen Fünf“: Elefant, Nashorn, Leopard, Löwe und Büffel. Im dritten Satz begegnen wir allerlei unheimlichen Reptilien, bevor das Werk fröhlich mit dem ‚Monkey Rock’ endet, in dem auch ein Affenruf vertont wird.

Cette pièce en quatre mouvements est une oeuvre instrumentation variable quatre voix et percussions. Le titre parle de lui-même : dans African Scenes, le continent Noir tient le premier rôle. Le premier mouvement nous entraîne dans un safari plein d’émotions. Dans le deuxième nous observons les grands seigneurs de la savane : éléphant, rhinocéros, léopard, lion et buffl_x001A_e. Le climat du troisième mouvement donne un peu la chair de poule alors que nous rencontrons toutes sortes de reptiles dangereux. Heureusement, l’oeuvre s’achève avec le joyeux Monkey Rock, au cours duquel nous entendons même le cri d’un singe.

Questo brano in quattro parti è pensato per strumentazione variabile a quattro voci e percussioni. Il titolo parla da solo: in African Scenes il continente nero riveste il ruolo principale. Il primo movimento vede i protagonisti iniziare un avventuroso safari. Nella seconda parte inizia la ricerca dei “Big-Five”: elefante, rinoceronte, leopardo, leone e bufalo. Il terzo movimento si caratterizza dall’inaspettato incontro con rettili rari, e precede il quarto e ultimo movimento. Monkey Rock, in stile più giocoso, rappresenta l’incontro con una simpatica e vivace scimmietta.

As if looking back on his youth toward the end of his life, Richard Strauss wrote a second concerto for horn and orchestra, again in Eb major, around sixty years after his first concerto for horn. This sublimely beautiful late work, which gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss� poor health and the Second World War, was premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the direction of Karl Böhm. It was not until after Strauss� death that the concerto appeared in print in London, making a critical new edition on the basis of the autograph sources and performance material more than overdue. The editor, Hans Pizka, former principal horn of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, learned first-hand about the performance tradition and genesis of the concerto as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg. For use in lessons and for performances, the especially playable piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit is a great help.

During the intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering for the creation of a commissioned composition for wind trio, I had the idea of writing a larger organ work on the Royal Theme at the same time. This is how the Three Ricercare came into being. They are multi-part fantasies for organ, which - connected by the frequently transformed thematic material of the Musical Offering and the manifoldly reshaped B-A-C-H motif - alternate between free, rapsodic parts on the one hand and strictly structured parts on the other. For my 60th birthday, W. E. v. Lewinski wrote an appreciation under the title: Music in the span between constraint and freedom. This formulation aptly characterizes the new organ work. Deze fantasie over kerstliederen werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in 1983 door het Hope College Choir, Holland Community Choral, orkest en orgel tijdens een concert en televisie opname in het Amerikaanse Holland-Michigan. Tegelijkertijdmaakte Jan de Haan een transcriptie voor ha/fa/bra waardoor het werk zowel instrumentaal als met koor (SATB) en/of orgel ad libitum uitvoerbaar is.Jan de Haan maakte in Christmas Fantasy gebruik van de liederen: Esist ein Ros’ entsprungen, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Once in Royal David’s City, The Herald Angels Sing, God Rest Ye Merry Getlemen en Good King Wenceslas.
