Forsyth's Modern Wind Music is a series of volumes containing exciting and challenging, but not unduly difficult, works by talented English composers of current or recent vintage for recital, study or recreation. Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument. In this volume for clarinet John Casken's 'Taerset' takes its title from Tarset in Northumberland, inspired by a holiday there, while Julia Usher's 'Subsequent Darkness' is inspired by a game of chess. The solo work is a capricious 'Arabesque' by Richard Orton, who also contributes a quartet for clarinets that plays on diaphragm articulation. David Ellis's 'Berceuse' is an extended lullaby, but not without its troubled dreams.

During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. Work for Clarinet solo. The composer writes 'The title refers to several levels in the piece. Partly a method I have used, where three lines are weaved, so they become one line, here the clarinet which can (nearly) only play one tone at the time. Either the three parts disappear and become one waving melodic line as in the beginning of the piece. Or they are put in different registers of the clarinet, so they are heard as separate lines weaving into one another. On a different level there is three different sequences, which are also weaved into one another; one which rises (for instance in the beginning), and one which falls, and one which falls in parallels in several registers. These three sequences become faster and faster every time they reappear. The idea of weaving melodic lines was inspired by Bach's pieces for solo strings, where he in a marvellous way established several simultaneous melodic lines, without simultaneous sounding notes. This happened by weaving parts, which in other works would sound simultaneously, into one another, so that only one note was heard at the time. This meant that in that long line, which was heard as the instrument's development of the piece, other melodies were weaving around each other with different focuses. Woven Lines was commissioned by DUT with support from the Danish Arts' Council.'.

Starting as a recitation and lasting approximately 6 minutes, the melodious piece features a cadenza and is divided as per below: 1. Recitative 2. Moderato 3. Cadenza 4. Largo. Mastering breathing technique and the accidentals is quite important for this work, which will demonstrate all your abilities during a contest. The book feature score and parts. M. Dautremer (1906-1978) was a French musician and pedagogue. He was director of the Conservatoire in Nancy and conductor for the Symphonic Orchestra of the city.

Composer, pianist and conductor Kirmo Lintinen is equally at home in jazz as in the world of classical music. Since the turn of the millennium, his main job has specifically been composing concert music. Stylistically, he has found his biggest inspiration in the Baroque and in early 20th-century Neoclassicism. He composed Rieha (Frolic) as a commission from the Crusell Music Festival in Uusikaupunki, Finland, as the obligatory piece for its international clarinet competition, and it was premiered by the semi-finalists in July 2009. The first part of Rieha is dominated by spurting arpeggios, trills and changing tempos. Following this impulsive opening is a brief respite, after which the piano and clarinet begin competing, tossing each other quick, accented semiquaver figures. The rhythm soon becomes syncopated and the piece enters the longest section, a sort of hypertuned, lurching ragtime. The closing section recalls all the work's motifs before burning itself out and vanishing like smoke. Rieha is a consummate virtuoso piece demanding nimble fingers, sharp articulation and a command of tone in all the clarinet's registers. The piano is more than just an accompanying instrument; it is an equal partner. The biggest challenge for the players is synchronising their parts: the changing tempos and metres, and the alternation of quick figures keep the performers on their toes and the audience alert.
