This Latin mass for choir and wind band was composed in honour of Saint Cecilia’s feast day, Saint Cecilia being the patroness of musicians. For this reason, many ensembles have annual concerts dedicated to Saint Cecila, which was the inspiration forthis piece. It is a festive, optimistic, but also comforting work, which in style perfectly suits the character of Saint Cecilia’s Feast Day. After Missa Brevis, Missa Katharina and The Gospel Mass, Missa Santa Cecilia isthe fourth published mass by the Dutch composer Jacob de Haan. Sa Música - ‘Our Music’ - is the music from Mallorca, an island with a long and difficult past. The work tells of the Greeks, who once erected a temple on the island; of the Romans who occupied the island; and of traditional processions that continue to take place. A Spanish fiesta and a lyrical section, which is inspired by a famous pirate poem, bring this work to a close with Spanish flair. This theme can also be sung in the original Spanish with one or more singers or choir (available separately: DHP 1125313-050).Sa Música, ‘Haar’ muziek, de muziek van Mallorca, een eiland met een bewogen geschiedenis. Salutation was originally composed for a cappella choir to a poem by Bengali poet and musician Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). The music takes up the spiritual message of the poem, that we live our lives in one salutation to God ending back in an eternal home. Phillip Littlemore's brilliant arrangement for concert band adds a work of great contemplative beauty to the repertoire.

The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment DayÂ? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text.

There are just over twenty secular cantatas in Bach's prolific output, which include The Coffee Cantata (No 211), The Wedding Cantata (No 202), Phoebus and Pan (No 201) and the Hunt Cantata (No 208) which contains the famous aria Sheep May Safely Graze. Written for four vocal soloists it was originally scored for a relatively large orchestra (including flutes (recorders), oboes and horns) and mixed choir. Although secular in character, the words describe how well a faithful shepherd keeps watch over his flock and hence has obvious allusions to the teachings of the Christian church. Bring a bit of the Baroque era to your concert with this first class arrangement by Philip Sparke. Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts. The title of this work is based on the name of the commissioning band: Music Society Asaf (Dutch for Asaph). In the Hebrew Bible, the poet, singer and seer Asaph is in charge of the choir in the house of King David. Various psalms, including Psalm 81, which is used in this work, are attributed to him. The melody of this psalm is flanked by a march-like initial part, and the traditional klezmer melody ‘Uri Tzion’ features as a spectacular finale.
