Bach composed the cantata O God, from heaven look on us BWV 2 for the 2nd Trinity Sunday 1724 as the second cantata of the annual cycle of chorale cantatas. It is based on Martin Luther's rewriting of Psalm 112. The opening movement is one of a group of cantata opening movements which are not concertante but kept entirely in the motet style, with the instruments serving only to reinforce the singers. The archaic character of this movement is heightened by the addition of a trombone quartet. The concertante style is all the more significant in the first aria for contralto, solo violin and continuo. The first secco recitative represents a special feature: two fragments of the chorale are woven as arioso into the recitative, both in text and melody; futhermore, they are also taken up canonically by the continuo. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3100200.

Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5031400.

?Composed by Pierre Villette, Ave Verum, Op. 3 is a Eucharistic hymn for SATB choral a cappella. Dedicated to the Chapel Master at Rouen Cathedral, Sir Canon Delestre, this piece is highly lyrical and melodious. Written in Latin, its tempo is quite slow (52) and it includes numerous harmonies as well as some short exchanges between the voices. The polytonal aspects are probably the most difficult part of the singing and the actual title means ??Hail, True Body??, the main lyrics glorify Jesus. Another music setting of this hymn was composed by Mozart. Pierre Villette (1926-1998) was a French composer of choral and instrumental music. Strongly influenced by Catholicism, his musical heritage ran from Fauré to Messiaen.andrdquo.

A reflection on Thomas Tallis' 'Te lucis ante terminum'. In each verse the Latin is sung in strict two-part canon: first in the tenor and bass, then in the soprano and alto, and finally in the alto and tenor. Against this an English text with optional German flows freely. Choir SSATBB, a capella. Vocal Score.
