Feldman's was a music shop in London in the early 20th century.They sold collections of popular music for playing at home, and some of these were called 'Feldman's Sixpenny Editions'. Collections like these were among my first feverish encounters with music as a boy. I fell in love with pieces like 'Martial Steps' and 'The dog barks, the caravan passes On'. I entered into them completely, becoming one not only with the music, but with the paper they were printed on, and the advertisements on the back. I pored over these, laying my face on them, waiting for signs of my future direction. The piano plays a significant role in the music. The last piece in the collection, 'The Innermost Secret', refers to the lunches Satie had with Debussy. Satie said that Debussy cooked pork chops 'with the innermost secret'. (Gerald Barry).

Gerald Barry's The coming of winter is a setting of an Irish poem dating from the 9th or 10th century, and was commissioned for the 34th Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music at University College, Cork, in May 1997. The setting is notable for its idiosyncratic use of text: not only are the words of the poem sung both forwards and backwards, but the second half of the piece is given over to percussive nonsense syllables, making this a quirky but highly invigorating image of 'the coming of winter'.

The opening lines of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time provides the text for Gerald Barry's Long Time. Beginning 'For a long time I used to go to bed early', the work unfolds over gently rising and falling C major scales, voice parts handing over to each other in the strict rhythmic regularity that prevails throughout the piece. Written in 1979 after seeing an exhibition of Rothko's paintings in Cologne, O is one of Barry's earliest published works. Both piano parts are the same and the composer describes the work as an exploration of ornamentation (the bending of an existing melody) and an etude in co-ordination (the challenge of playing exactly together).

Gerald Barrys new opera is based on Lewis Carrolls two beloved books, Alices Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. As with Barrys last opera, the lauded The Importance of Being Earnest, the composer has created the libretto himself from the authors original texts. Thus, the work remains faithful to many aspects of the Alice story but is trimmed and compressed into acompact 70-minute opera in one act. Barrys characteristic highspeed energy and riotous sense of humour propel the action forward inthis surreal plunge into the depths of Wonderland.
