This majestic work was composed for the November 12, 2017 Remembrance Service in Hatfield Church and dedicated to the memory of all who have lost their lives or were injured so that others may live in peace and liberty. Beginning with a stately fanfare, the work then expands on a soaring melody and finishes with a return to the fanfare in full volume and grandeur. A perfect work for a final postlude.

Lemare's compositions are uneven in quality, but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style, but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance, as does the romantic, chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world's highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900's, drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period, he began the life of a travelling recitalist, beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900, a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ, allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther.The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows:'1st movement:Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of faith ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people.2nd movement:In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the Luther rose which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, white is the colour of angels and ghosts, black stands for the pain of crucification: The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified. But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time.3rd movement:The omnipresence of death and dying - from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life - was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The Danse macabre was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen from 1524 (Enchiridion from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant Media vita in morte sumus created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air.4th movement:The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen, are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a perpetuum mobile, i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air.5th movement:The Mighty Fortress, on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the Marseille anthem of the Reformation, Friedrich Engels the Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant birdcall version of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the ideals of freedom of Christians.'.

The third in a series of works for organ by the contermporary American composer, Sydney Hodkinson. It is a powerful, stunning work for two organs ( the second organ may be live or recorded, and if so, a few electronic manipulations of the sound are employed). TALAYOT-Megalith III (Talayot is a large prehistoric stone hut consisting of many small rocks ) was commissioned by William Albright who premiered it in 1975. The composer comments about TALAYOT, Since 1968, I had been interested in both the simplest reduction of pitch materials and the employment of staticity within a given time-span... The aural effect striven for was not at all unlike walking around a Calder steel or a monolithic stone sculpture: huge, never changing, yet constantly different.
