At the age of 20 Mendelssohn had already arranged some of Handel's great works for the Berlin Singakademie, including the Dettingen Te Deum, and he suited them to the tastes of his time. Thus, in large part he retained the original music and added wind parts, which were completely new. A special aspect is represented by Zelter's German text which, among other things, also proved how important and popular the Dettingen Ted Deum was during Mendelssohn's time. Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir.
