String quartet (P/ST) - difficult SKU: HL.49033268 Composed by Joerg Widmann. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. Edition Schott. Score and parts. Composed 1997. 62 pages. Duration 14'. Schott Music #ED 9747. Published by Schott Music (HL.49033268). ISBN 9790001136846. 9.25x12.0x0.175 inches. The five strings quartets by Jorg Widmann are compact studies, like those of his teacher Wolfgang Rihm. Performed individually, the focus is on the respective central technical and aesthetic idea. Performed as a cycle, however, they get closer to the well-known classical multi-movement form. The theme of the first string quartet is the quintessential beginning: in an introduction, it takes some time for the strained sounds to turn into harmonics. Then it is the viola, the 'poor cousin' in the string quartet literature, which takes up and defines the musical work. The workconcludes with a demanding eight-part double-stopping polyphony of all instruments. $59.00 - See more - Buy online

It is unknown when exactly Brahms wrote his 13 Kanons op. 113, a collection of 13 rounds for female voices. However, it is likely that the individual pieces were composed between 1859 and 1863 and for various occasions. In this period, Brahms did various counterpoint studies to which the rounds as one the strictest forms of counterpoint fit nicely. Another contributing factor around this time was Brahms' work with the newly founded Hamburger Frauenchor [Hamburg Female Choir]. Some of the rounds can be found in the part books of this ensemble. The innocent, small, amorous lines that should be sung lightly and joyfully by pretty girls were not published until 1891. For the whole set, Brahms received the formidable salary of 6000 marks. As well as using lines by famous writers, Brahms drew lyrics from folk songs, too.

Barcarolles for a Sinking City was inspired by the city of Venice, a place that has long held the fascination of artists, writers and composers, and which I have been lucky enough to visit on several occasions. Sadly it seems that future generations may not be so lucky: in addition to the city's slow sinking and recently discovered tilting, studies predict that if global warming and the resultant rise of ocean levels is unabated, the entire city (as well as many other coastal cities around the globe) will be under water by 2100. I. Funeral Gondola The late, cryptic piano works of Franz Liszt made a profound impression on me as a young composer, among them two works he entitled La Lugubre Gondola (usually translated as The Funeral Gondola ) which were said to be a premonition of Wagner's death in Venice, his coffin transported through the canals in a black gondola. These late pieces of Liszt acquired even greater significance to me after I spent two summers in Bayreuth under the patronage of Friedelind Wagner, the granddaughter of Wagner and great-granddaughter of Liszt. This movement is a meditation on Wagner, Liszt, Venice and its own evanescence. II. Barcarolle/Quodlibet The Quodlibet (Latin for what pleases) is a musical form dating back to the 15th century where many disparate melodies are juxtaposed. Popular in the Renaissance, sacred and secular melodies were combined, often to comical effect due to the resultant incongruity of the words. The form was considered the ultimate test of a composer's mastery of counterpoint. The most famous Quodlibet is without doubt the final Variation of Bach's Goldberg Variations. As a form the Quodlibet is less common in more recent music, although examples can be found in the works of Kurt Weill and David Del Tredici. My own Barcarolle/Quodlibet was inspired by the (perhaps apocryphal) story of the funeral where musicians were asked to play a Bach Choral, but due to miscommunication played instead the Bacarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann. Here, the Bach Choral Allen Menschen mussen sterben (All Men Must Die) is heard in the strings pizzicato, with a tempo indication In slow motion. The alto line of the Bach suggests a phrase from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (Alle Menchen werden Bruder) heard in the muted trombone. Before long, the famous tune from Offenbach's opera is heard, followed by quotations from iconic Barcarolles by Chopin, Mendelssohn and Faure, as well as two Venetian popular songs and more Beethoven. III. Barcarola/Ostinato/Carillon An ostinato is a repeated musical figure, and carillon is Italian for music box. This movement references the obsolete genre of salon pieces that imitated music boxes: such works by composers like Liadov and Gretchaninov used to be a mainstay of pianists' encore repertoire. This movement is however much darker in conception than those pleasant trifles. Utilizing the full battery of percussion, the carefully notated temporal slowing of the ostinato becomes overwhelmed by a poignant chorale melody before this box is snapped shut. IV. Barcarolle Oubliee (Forgotten Barcarolle) Marked limpido (still) the final movement begins with the sound of rain produced by a percussion instrument called (appropriately) a rain stick. Halting phrases in the harp coalesce into the accompaniment for a plangent melody heard in the clarinet. The central Adagio of this movement leads to a shattering climax, before the opening phrases return and dissipate into nothingness. $48.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
| 13 Simple and Progressive Menuets from the "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach" for Harp Ut Orpheus
Harp; Methods and Music for Children SKU: UT.MAG-268 Composed by Johann S...(+)
Harp; Methods and Music for Children SKU: UT.MAG-268 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Anna Pasetti. Saddle stitching. Magadis. Classical. Ut Orpheus #MAG 268. Published by Ut Orpheus (UT.MAG-268). ISBN 9790215326798. 9 x 12 inches. The study of Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions on the harp has a long history. The first who understood its importance for educational purposes was Robert Nicolas Charles Bochsa, who inserted some fugues of Bach and Haendel in his monumental method for the harp op. 60, accompanied by detailed fingerings. However, it was from the beginning of the 20th Century that the great harp teachers began to work extensively on Bach’s repertoire. Among the most illustrious examples we can mention Henriette Renié, who published two volumes of transcriptions, one containing ten preludes and one ten short pieces, Alfred Kastner who worked on the Two–part Inventions, Marcel Grandjany with his famous studies based on partitas and sonatas for solo violin, or Annie Louis David, who published two important volumes of preludes and fugues taken from The Well-Tempered Clavier, not to mention all those who transcribed just a single piece for concert purpose. As is known, the Notebook for Anna Magdalena (Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach), consists of two small manuscript volumes, the first compiled in Köthen in 1722 and the second in Leipzig three years later. The first contains only compositions by Johann Sebastian, while the second also includes pieces by other authors such as Couperin, Hasse and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The idea of collecting in a volume some of the simplest compositions contained in the Notebook was born mainly from the desire to introduce even the youngest students to Bach’s music, in an easy and progressive way, so as to start as soon as possible at make them familiar with polyphonic writing and the use of embellishments, introduced here in a simplified version. $14.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day. The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final. $22.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Er Huang was commissioned by Carnegie Hall, New York where, in 2009, it received its world premiere with solo pianist Lang Lang and the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. Chen wrote about the work, 'Music has its own life – for me the germination of any musical work is like a tree growing out of the ground, and the eventual outcome of this life is entirely unknowable in advance.' Commenting on the connection between Er Huang and its source of inspiration, the Er Huang tunes from the classical Peking Opera repertoire, he says that, 'the way I applied musical elements from Peking Opera to my own writing was not really based on musicological studies. Rather, these tunes were an essential part of my childhood in Beijing, and always intertwined with memories of my family and the society I lived in at the time. Many people from my generation would be able to hum these tunes by heart. These days, however, these familiar tunes have been almost entirely forgotten, as the younger generation is much more occupied by western pop culture. This is why, when I quote these tunes, Ioften do so with a great sense of nostalgia. Traditional Chinese music has a very strong character, and the organic assimilation of something that I feel most akin to, over time, into my own musical language, has become an essential part of my artistic expression.'. $40.00 - See more - Buy online

Ibert's Concerto for Flute was composed in 1934, at the height of his professional career. The work is lighthearted, depicting the composer's favoured use of gentle humour and festivity. Piano SKU: PA.H07957 Fur Klavier. Composed by Luboš Fišer. Stapled. Performance score. With Text Language: Czech/German/English. Editio Baerenreiter Praha #H07957_00. Published by Editio Baerenreiter Praha (PA.H07957). ISBN 9790260104464. 31 x 23.5 cm inches. Piano Sonata No. 3 was written in 1960 during the composer's studies at HAMU (Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) under Emil Hlobil. The first half of the 1960s was the period during which Fiser's musical language underwent fundamental change as he rapidly cultivated his own, distinctive style, established in Fifteen Prints after Durer's Apocalypse. This sonata thus also includes several essential traits which shift his compositional development further. The work has two movements, however, its internal structure abandons traditional form. The piece is divided into several short, mutually contrasting sections, whereby the distinctions between the adjacent parts are emphasised by the thematic and chordal treatment. These contrasts are also supported by the chosen dynamics, tempo and other expressional means. The harmony is largely based on traditional chords or their condensed form while, in certain passages, we will nevertheless come across semitone clusters or fourth chords. The melody is still chiefly diatonic; at times Fiser uses chromatic sequences. These new elements in Sonata No. 3 indicate an attempt to simplify his writing and ensure greatest transparency and impact. This endeavour became a basic characteristic of Fiser's compositions from the mid-1960s onwards.
The sonata originally bore the postscript Fantasia, which was subsequently taken out by the composer. It was first performed by Ales Bilek in 1961. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1967); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer's manuscript (kept at the National Museum - Czech Museum of Music). $28.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Written in 1972 to 1983, it concerns the Catholic preacher, Saint Francis of Assisi, and displays the composer's devout Catholic faith. The third volume contains the complete third act of the Opera, comprising the final two scenes; Stigma, and Death and New Life. Despite his studies of Mozart and Wagner's operas, Messiaen vowed that he would never compose one himself, however, he was eventually convinced by the French president. After feeling unworthy to dramatise either Christ's Passion or Resurrection, he eventually chose to portray the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose life often reflected Christ's chastity, humility, poverty and suffering. This unique Opera by the individual Messiaen is a significant contribution to the repertoire, and was notably semi-staged as part of the BBC proms series in 2008.&rdquo. $94.15 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

String Ensemble. Classical. Softcover. 12 pages. Schott Music #ED22607. Published by Schott Music (HL.49045929). 9.0x12.0x0.057 inches. The Austro-Hungarian composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was musically precocious: At the suggestion of AntonÃn Dvorák, he receivedpiano lessons at the age of seven, and at the age of ten became a student at the Prague Conservatory. Further piano studies in Vienna, Cologne and Leipzig as well as composition lessons with Max Reger supplemented his education. His Jewish heritage, which defamed his music as “degenerateâ€, and his sympathy for communism, however, cost him his life. In Prague and finally interned in Wülzburg near Weissenburg in Bavaria, he died of tuberculosis. Schulhoff's musical significance lies in the integration of jazz into art music, for example in his oratorio H.M.S. Royal Oak or in his Hot Sonata for alto saxophone and piano. He earned his living as a jazz pianist for a long time. In August 1922 he wrote four short piano pieces, his Rag Music, to which he added four more phrases in November: released as Partita, also known as Jazz-like Partita - with the fashion dances Ragtime, Foxtrott, Shimmy, Boston and - as No. 7 - a tango. From a piano to a string quartet movement, the arrangement presents itself as a delicate and smart, technically not too difficult sweet, suitable as a diversion or addition in a quartet program. | Grand Recueil pour la Guitare Op. 114 - Vol. 2: Third and Fourth Part Guitar Classical guitar [Score] Ut Orpheus
Guitar SKU: UT.CH-387 Composed by Ferdinando Carulli. Edited by Romolo Ca...(+)
Guitar SKU: UT.CH-387 Composed by Ferdinando Carulli. Edited by Romolo Calandruccio. Classical. Score. Ut Orpheus #CH 387. Published by Ut Orpheus (UT.CH-387). ISBN 9790215328235. 9 x 12 inches. Opus 114 is certainly one of Carulliâ??s most important didactic works, so much so that the author himself made a point of writing in the second edition of his famous Method op. 27 (1819): The student, when moving on to the second part, must continue to practise on the easy pieces which are to be found in opus nos. 50, 15, 35, 36, 93, 7 and above all in opus 114. He maintained this indication also in later editions of the Method itself, unlike what he did with other collections of studies which were no longer recommended. The purpose of op. 114, in particular of the preludes, is clearly explained by the author himself in the preface of op. 265: I have already offered preludes in my opus nos. 71 and 114 to people, but they serve to study and learn to play all sorts of difficult passages, to practise modulating, and learn to improvise on the guitar. Carulli seems to want to provide his students with a large handbook of formulas typical of his musical writing and he does so by making use of the keys which, in his opinion, are most congenial to the guitar. In his Method he points out: Each instrument has its favourite keys: the guitar can be played in all keys, but the best ones are: A major and minor, D major and minor, E major and minor, C, G, F. The others are difficult; [â?¦]. However, some of the difficult ones are included but only in the fourth part. Of course, the easiness of a key essentially depends on the possibility of extensive use of the open strings, especially in the low notes, ensuring the accompaniment on the main degrees. This edition has some unique features. First of all, it is the first complete modern edition of Carulliâ??s op. 114; it presents an important critical apparatus in which the Carullian technique is presented and analysed; finally, Carulli's original fingering is indicated in the score (including that of the thumb of the left hand) and the missing one was obtained from the comparison of his other fingerings present in other works. All this allows an easy and complete reading both for those who perform the pieces following the nineteenth-century performance practice with a historical instrument, and for those who play a modern instrument. $43.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

| Sonata in Bb major Op. 1 Piano solo [Score] Breitkopf & Härtel
Piano SKU: BR.EB-8118 Composed by Richard Wagner. Solo instruments; Softc...(+)
Piano SKU: BR.EB-8118 Composed by Richard Wagner. Solo instruments; Softcover. Edition Breitkopf. Sonata; Romantic. Score. Composed 1831. 24 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8118. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8118). ISBN 9790004175019. 9 x 12 inches. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is rightly considered as the 19th-century music dramatist whose formal and harmonic originality, for example in Tristan and Isolde, provided a significant impetus to the development of 20th-century music. Despite Wagner's fame, his reuvre for piano remains practically unknown. Tobe sure, these primarily early works and occasional compositions hardly even hint at the outstanding characteristics of the later works such as leit-motifs, flowing transitions or original forms. Nonetheless, whoever is acquainted with Wagner's later music dramas will undoubtedly not fail to be impressed by the individual melodic and harmonic traits of his piano works. The Sonata in B-flat Major Op. 1 is of special interest to us today since it is Wagner's first published work, composed in 1831 and printed in 1832 by Breitkopf & Hartel. At that time, Wagner was studying counterpoint with Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. Weinlig, however, only agreed to give Wagner lessons if he promised to refrain from composing for half a year. In the course of his studies, Wagner was allowed to compose the piano sonata in B-flat Major as a kind of journeyman-work. His teacher Weinlig succeeded in having the work published by Breitkopf & Hartel. Hence the dedication of this piece to Weinlig is not surprising, since the 18-year-old Wagner would otherwise have had great difficulty finding a publisher. This Sonata in B-flat Major, which has long been out of print, is a reproduction of the first edition by Breitkopf & Hartel (plate number 10433). For this reprint, obvious typographical errors have been corrected (missing or wrong accidentals and dynamic indications). The work presents a four-movement classical sonata form and is stylistically reminiscent of Mozart and Beethoven. Shortly before composing this sonata, Wagner wrote a piano reduction of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was easily playable and yet gratifying to hear. This helps explain the octave-doublings typical of piano reductions. Wiesbaden, Fall 1980
Respectfully dedicated to Theodor Weinlig, the choral master and music director of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. $22.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

$90.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

This is why, when I quote these tunes, I often do so with a great sense of nostalgia. Traditional Chinese music has a very strong character, and the organic assimilation of something that I feel most akin to, over time, into my own musical language, has become an essential part of my artistic expression.'. $38.00 - See more - Buy online
