Successful French composer, Pierre Gabaye (1930-2000) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won the 1956 Prix de Rome. His competence is proved by his Sonatina for Flute and Bassoon. Gabaye's compositional style has been described as following the French neo-classical tradition, such as the music of Poulenc. Sonatina for Flute and Bassoon exemplifies the composer's light-hearted music. A typical performance of the duet lasts about 10 minutes and 40 seconds and comprises three movements. For all advanced flautists and bassoonists seeking alternative ensemble performance repertoire, Gabaye's Sonatina for Flute and Bassoon is ideal..

“Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, Sonata No. 2 being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Sonata No. 2 which premiered in 1925. Addressing many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, emotion, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms, Sonata No. 2 is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.”.

Contemporary Japanese composer, Yuko Uebayashi moved to Paris in 1998. Uebayashi's works have been met with much success in both Japan and France, Sonata for Flute and Piano being no exception. Flautist Jean Ferrandis described Uebayashi's works as gems that, although they are so different, they yet belong to the same world, a world of vivacity, dreams, tenderness, humour, and one that is subtly contradicted by vehemence, virtuosity, melancholy and sorrow. Sonata for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements with a typical performance lasting around 26 minutes. Sonata for Flute and Piano is modern in style, exploiting tonality, rhythm and the ensemble, making this a sublime addition to the advanced repertoire of the instrument.
