These sonatas are a compendium of violin playing of his time and laid the groundwork for future violin compositions. Over the years the sonatas have been published innearly 100 editions all based on Corelli’s first edition which contains only the solo violin line above an unrealized bass line. Today the sonatas are well known in numerous modern continuo realizations. However a realization from Corelli’s time by Antonio Tonelli also exists and is presented here for the first time in a modern performing edition. This realization is surprising in that it contains full chords sometimes played by both hands. In addition Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition includes for the first time many violin embellishments. For the most part they have been found in handwritten documents by Tartini Geminiani McGibbon Dubourg and Roger (from a re-print of the sonatas from c. 1710). These embellishments are presented in a separate booklet which players can place alongside Corelli’s original on the music stand. Complementing this Urtext edition are a historical introduction a critical commentary and an appendix containing preludes to the sonatas for keyboard by Tonelli.

Arcangelo Corelli (1653 - 1713) was an Italian violinist and composer. He was one of the earliest pioneers of the modern Violin and helped define its capabilities for generations after. He only published 6 opuses in his lifetime but they are arguably the most influential collection of baroque music that survives today. His Opus 5 was a collection of 12 Violin Sonatas the only Sonatas he published. They were written for the composer’s own use and performed by him many times showcasing the Violin technique he had developed over his career. Adagio and Allegro are the last two movements in Corelli’s Sonata No.1 in DMajor. Originally written for Violin and Harpsichord they are published here for Violin and Piano.

Sonaten op. 1: Nr. 1 4 und 9 op. 3: Nr. 2 4 und 12. Very few works in music history have been associated with the phrase 'epoch-making' yet Arcangelo Corelli's Trio Sonatas are among them. In 1681 and 1685 with the composition of Sonate da chiesa Op. 1 and Sonate da camera Op. 2 Corelli laid the foundation for a genre which was to be the chamber music format for almost 100 years. It was only in 1781 that it was superseded by Joseph Haydn's String Quartets Op. 33 which were also highly significant to the era. From a historical point of view the String Quartet can be viewed as a 'child' of the trio sonata. As a result Wiener Urtext Edition have published a selection of 12 of a total of 48 trio sonatas due to the 300th anniversary of the composer's death. Volume 1 contains six sonatas of the Da Chiesa model Volume 2 six pieces of the Da Camera type. This new edition was based on original editions the first Italian reprints as well as the Rogers Amsterdam edition. In addition to parts for the melodic instruments the new edition also contains a Continuo score with realised easily playable Basso Continuo. Arcangelo Corelli was famous as a virtuoso on the Violin and is regarded by many as the founder of modern Violin technique; he systematized the art of proper bowing and was able to extract a singing beauty and lyricism that was previously unheard of. He was one of the first to use double stops and chords and these qualities attracted international fame both for his own performances and for his many students who began to disseminate his techniques and on the Violin. Corelli’s Twelve Sonatas Op. 5 is a work of the highest order and acts like a compendium of Violin technique circa. 1700. This first volume contains Sonatas 1-6 all of which have been editedfaithfully by Gustav Jensen.

4 Clarinettes Et Quatuors De Clarinettes

Wiener Urtext-These sonatas are among the epoch-making works of the Violin repertoire and nowadays figure in the standard repertoire of every violinist. It is all the more surprising therefore that until now there has been no Urtext edition of such significant works. The score is based on a first edition supervised by Corelli himself. From what we know of performance practice in Corelli's time however more was expected of the violinist than just a musical reading of the printed score: it was customary to add ornamentation verging on improvisation with embellishment and 'variations as desired'. The original score is therefore presented here withthe earliest documented ornamentation from a reprint published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1708. This ornamentation is not meant to be slavishly imitated but to stimulate the player to find their own creative and stylistically confident interpretation of the score. As Roger did not specify any ornaments for the sonatas in the second volume the 'variations as desired' used by Corelli’s pupil Geminiani have been reproduced with the ninth Sonata as an example. Advice on performance is given by the Cologne baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel. This advice does not only apply to ornamentation but also to articulation bowings and more besides calling for specific markings in the separate Violin part. The realisation of the Continuo part echoes the fashions of that time. Here too advice on performance is meant to stimulate free interpretation by the Continuo player. A figured Bass part is included for the player who prefers to read the accompaniment from figures.
