Flodden by Sally Beamish is a 28-minute work for soprano and chamber orchestra with texts by R.S. Craig, Jean Elliot and J.B. Selkirk, with two interludes in between. It was written in 2013 for the 500th anniversary of the tragedy at Flodden Field, a battle which led to casualties and losses of historic proportions. Sally Beamish decided to set the texts and to write for soprano to express the grief of those left behind -- particularly the women and children. The orchestration throughout the work is spare and angular; characterized by stark exposed solo lines, nervy ornamentation, and blurred string textures.
Flodden was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, supported with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation, RVW Trust, Cruden Foundation and Hope Scott Trust. It was first performed in September 2013 at Hamilton Town House by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Joseph Swensen, with soprano soloist Shuna Scott Sendall, and was shortlisted for both a Royal Philharmonic Society and a British Composer Award.
The full score (EP 72932) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. The performance material can be hired.

Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world première of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colorful, and direct---with its own distinct mood. Arranged for brass band.

Commissioned by the Mavron Quartet for its tenth anniversary, with funds from the PRS for Music foundation's Women Make Music award, Rhian Samuel's Threaded Light presents a novel take on the string-quartet genre. Two of its movements include a percussive element played by members of the ensemble, with an optional percussion part for a fifth player. In addition, the unusual seven-movement structure arises from two elements: the idea of a thread, continuous, stretched or broken; and, contrasting with this notion, the influence of pictorial imagery in the slow, evocative second and sixth movements ('Late Sun' and 'Estuary by Moonlight') inspired by the impression of light passing through clouds near the composer's home on the hills above Aberdyfi in mid-Wales. Deriving from shared material, three abstract, prelude-like movements entitled 'Twine' (Nos. 1, 4 and 7) act as the 'thread' that binds the work into a whole, placing the cloudscapes and the similarly luminous percussion-based inventions, No. 3, 'Glinting Stars' and No. 5, 'Foxtrot Gleam', within the framework of an overall and satisfying symmetry.
