Piano duet score. 1st performance Ellesmere College, January 1986 by Richard Markham and David Nettle. Duration c.24 minutes. The work is in three movements and the musical thought is symphonic. The first movement (based entirely on the opening motive) goes through a series of paragraphs which eventually culminate in an extended melodic line played entirely by the treble player. The middle movement is a playful Scherzo with a rather sardonic waltz for its Trio. The slow movement (which comes last) is much more relaxed and concentrates on a D major motive with sharpened fourths, but the more intense moods of the first movement return in a suddenly impassioned middle section.

Johannes Brahms twice chose a theme by his friend and mentor Robert Schumann as the basis for piano variations. While the Variations op. 9 were composed for piano solo, as an exception he wrote Opus 23 for a four-hand scoring. Its tender, chorale-like theme is particularly touching and was carefully chosen by Brahms: It was among Robert Schumann's last musical thoughts, which the composer, already tormented by severe delusions, believed he heard from the voices of angels. The Variations, composed in 1861, end with a kind of funeral march and can be understood as a wistful farewell to his deceased friend. The musical text is based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, thus ensuring the highest accuracy and reflecting the most current state of research. Furnished with fingerings by Andreas Groethuysen, a proven specialist for the four-hand repertoire, this Urtext edition leaves nothing to be desired.

Lord Berners (1883-1950) was one of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating personalities in British music. He became a pioneer in the avant-garde when he wrote his first music whilst living in Rome as adiplomat during World War 1; Balanchine choreographed his first two ballets and Ashton the next three; in 1931 he had the first exhibition of his paintings; in 1934 he published the first volume of his autobiography, FirstChildhood, and two years later his first novel, The Camel -- and three more novels came out in 1941. On top of all this during the 1930s, known as 'the versatile peer', he increasingly gained a reputation as an eccentric,which he realised was good for publicity.A wry humour pervades everything, as in these three sets of piano duets. Berners' songs and piano music, too, are as full of whimsical references as those of Erik Satie -- he hasbeen called the English Satie and the Ronald Firbank of music. Berners was not prolific but whatever he did was stamped with his own fastidious accomplishment. He may not have been the last eccentric but his music, writingand painting combine to make him one of the most rewarding.

Liszt finished the original work for piano two hands in 1876 which he arranged for piano duet some weeks later and dedicated to his grand-daughter Daniela von Bülow. The series belonging to the late piano works consists of three volumes. In the first transcriptions of early christmas carols can be found while the remaining two hold mostly genre pictures. This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesserknown compositions by important masters. In his last years, Mozart composed a large number of German Dances for orchestra. This music for daily use of the time - intended functionally, for dancing and entertainment - is distinguished by enchanting ideas and simple textures. The editor has tried to cany over the instrumental subtleties into the piano-duet writing. These dances are particularly suitable for introducing some relaxation into the learning of the piano, for the interpretative and technical workingout demanded by Mozart's original piano-duet works is not required to the same degree here. The marks of expression have been taken over from the original score and in part supplemented. Notes not marked otherwise are to be played non legato.
