Louise Farrenc was a profoundly influential French composer, performer, professor, and author. Though she would ultimately become quite a sought-after performer, her potential as a composer was recognized quite early on. Women were not permitted to enroll in conventional composition classes at the Conservatoire de Paris at the time, but, she did receive private lessons from Anton Reicha, the professor of composition there. Years later she would receive a permanent appointment as Professor of Piano at the same institution, a position she held for thirty years. She was the only woman during the 19th century to bear that title. Her piano etudes possess pedagogical value as well as great beauty and character. These works lend themselves quite well to the guitar duo setting. While I have rendered all of FarrencâÂÂs melodies quite faithfully, I have taken liberties with the accompaniments in order to make them more idiomatic to the guitar. Likewise, many of the effects of which the guitar is capable have been brought to bear in ways that deviate from the original intent of the etude. Alternatively, the challenges that some of these etudes were meant to address for the piano student are amplified by this adaptation. For example, etude 5 is intended to enable the piano student to improve the coordination between their left and right hands. It certainly presents a challenge in that regard to the guitar duo!These selections are entirely suitable for guitarists with limited experience, though they could, of course, be beautifully realized by players with a great deal more experience as well.Louise Farrenc était une compositrice, interprète, professeur et auteure française profondément influente. Alternativement, les défis que certaines de ces études étaient censées relever pour l'étudiant en piano sont amplifiés par cette adaptation. Par exemple, l'étude 5 est destinée àpermettre àl'élève de piano d'améliorer la coordination entre ses mains gauche et droite. Cela représente certainement un défi àcet égard pour le duo de guitares !Ces sélections conviennent parfaitement aux guitaristes ayant une expérience limitée, même si elles pourraient bien sûr également être magnifiquement réalisées par des musiciens beaucoup plus expérimentés.

This fourth booklet is dedicated to ensemble playing through five trios and three quartets of various styles (tango, ballad, rock, etc.) appropriate for the end of primary school with a few years of experience and the beginning of secondary school. Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. Four Album Leaves, Op. 28 is a set of pieces for piano solo composed by Edvard Grieg. The set was first published in 1878 in Leipzig by C.F. Peters. The Album Leaves were composed over the span of almost fifteen years. As such, they present a fascinating cross-section of Grieg's pianistic and compositional development. They are arranged in chronological order as follows: Allegro con moto (1864), Allegretto espressivo (1874), Vivace (1876), and Andantino serioso (1878).Having realized some years ago that due to GriegâÂÂs way of writing for the piano, that they would fit wonderfully on two guitars, I began with this set, and then moved onto more of his works, finally transcribing his complete set of 10 books of Lyric Pieces (66 pieces in all), all of which are available as separate publications at Les Productions DâÂÂOz. Sojo was Born in 1887 in Guatire, near the estate of Padre Sojo, who was himself the creator of the 18th Century Musical movement known as the Chacao School. Padre Antonio Soler is the most important Spanish composer of keyboard instruments of the XVIII century. Born in Olot he was baptized in 1729 and died in El Escorial in 1787. As a young boy he entered the Escolania of Montserrat, where he studied composition and organ, coinciding at the same monastery with the also Spanish composer of that time, Fernando Sor. Padre Soler spent great part of his life in El Escorial as chapel master and organist and met in Madrid Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti with whom he developped a deep friendship inspired on mutual admiration.In spite of the similar styles of both composers the fluid inspiration of Padre Soler excels for his own personality, definitely influenced by Spanish roots. Furthermore, I ask myself if the fact of being at the same monastery of Montserrat with guitarist composer Fernando Sor didn't play an important role in the future development of Padre Soler's style.I have transcribed for two guitars these three sonatas in the hope that also the guitarists can enjoy playing these little jewels, truly musical delights, that Padre Antonio Soler left for us.
