The names of George Gershwin (1898-1937) and Ira Gershwin (1896-1983) are synonymous across the globe with American musical creativity. The Gershwin family estates, their publishers, and the University of Michigan have joined forces to produce The George and Ira Gershwin Critical EditionÂ?the first-ever scholarly edition of the Gershwins' music and lyrics. This all-new practical edition facilitates both study and performance, giving a wide audience of musicians, scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike greater insight into the GershwinsÂ? art. The goal is to create clear and definitive publications that achieve the most accurate representations possible of the Gershwin brothers' unique and pioneering creativity. This all-new critical edition of the original 1924 arrangement of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue presents an authoritative transcription of arranger Ferde Grofé's handwritten holograph score preserved in the collection of the United States Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The edition represents as best as possible the piece as premiered by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at his â??Experiment in Modern Musicâ? concert on February 12, 1924. Grofé prepared the score for the specific talents and timbres of the Whiteman Orchestra, largely from an ink fair copy of Gershwin's two-piano short-score manuscript. Gershwin continued to modify the piano solo portion of this short score during rehearsals and, most likely, even after the premiere of the piece.

Black Earth was inspired by Kara Toprak, a popular song in Turkey. The composer of the song, Asik Veysel, was the last great Turkish balladeer. Fazil Say imitates the sound of the sax, a Turkish lute, through his selection of a muted effect in the Introduction and Epilogue. In contrast, folklore, Romantic piano style and jazz are entwined in the central sections to form a large-scale outburst. Now also available in an arrangement for two pianos.

Cards on the table - it's sight-reading time! Keyboard beginners can now train their sight-reading abilities with 16 piano and orchestral classics in new arrangements for two instruments and four players, each of them using one hand only. Thereby they will be able to gain experience in ensemble playing and acquire motivation by playing pieces they might not master on their own yet. For a better orientation in the score, the four symbols from playing cards are assigned to the four parts. Advanced students can also use the arrangements as piano duets - ideal for group lessons and recitals!

Witaj Reksio! (Hello Reksio!) for two pianos is a collection of short music pieces for young performers. A few titles included in it refer to the themes from the well-known TV series for children, created by Lechoslaw Marszalek in the Animated Film Studi on Bielsko-Biala. The main hero is a very popular character in Poland: a nice dog Reksio who, together with his friends, has accompanied the successive generations, entertaining and educating them. The collection also comprises pieces that do not directly refer to the series. I hope the music will stir the listeners' imagination and will communicate all that the young performers want to tell them with their instruments. I wish all young friends interesting interpretation of my music. I also hope that you will create new interesting music stories that will be played and listened to with great joy. [Zenon Kowalowski].
