Ravel's plans for a piano concerto can be traced back to 1906, but it was only in early 1929 that the composer seriously started work on one. He later stated that he wrote it âin the spirit of the concertos by Mozart and Saint-Saënsâ, the music being âcheerful and brilliantâ and not âaiming for profundity or dramatic effectsâ. The outer movements are characterised by rhythmic drive and borrowings from jazz; while the slow movement, with its subtle shifts of accented beats, is entirely dedicated to melody. Alongside manuscripts and prints, a recording made under Ravel's supervision by the work's dedicatee, Marguerite Long, was consulted for this Henle Urtext edition. Since its successful premiere in January 1932 the concerto has been part of the repertoire of all great pianists, including Pascal Rogé, the French music expert who has provided the fingerings for the solo part.

Suite No. 1 is a hymn to the divinity of the dance. The piece explores all possibilities of extreme rhythm, harmony and orchestration in order to place special emphasis on the piano as a solo instrument with all its possibilities: from percussion instrument to lyric simplicity. At the end, the composer quotes the style of his scores together with the ancient tragedies in an epilogue with prominent signals from the wind section.

Despite its seemingly sparse texture, this is a large-scale, virtuosic concerto in an expressive tonal idiom, full of memorable rhythmic detail. It was premiered in 1992, 32 years after its composition, by Konrad Richter and Israel Yinon. Their recording for Bayer Records won an important award by German critics. A further recording by Igor Ardasev and Gerd Albrecht is available on Orfeo.

Chopin wrote works for piano and orchestra between 1827 and 1832. They were written successively therefore there are traces of the gradual crystallisation and maturation of the composer's style. Their form and nature are dominated by the rules of the stile brillant, as well as the tendency to accent the national aspect. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form.

This piece dates back to Vasks' Sturm and Stress period and was premiered in 1977. Freely notated over long passages, it uses both commonly notated passages and symbols as well as clusters. Vasks uses this wide range of modern piano technique for an expressive performance of both pianists. The performers have to cope with eruptions of powerful sounds and passages of great softness, while excitement alternates with contemplation.

Water Dances is a work scored for two pianos from 2011. Much of the work is an arrangement of the music written for the Michael Nyman Band for Peter Greenaway's 1984 film Making a Splash. The two-piano version was recorded by the Labèque sisters for their CD Minimalist Dream House on the KML/Deutsche Grammophon label.
