The Four Duets, BWV 802-805 are part of a larger collection, the Clavier-ubung III sometimes called the German Organ Mass. They were first published in 1739, mostly likely intended to be performed on the organ, as they have a range from C2 to C6; playable on almost any organ from that era. However, they could have been performed on any keyboard of the time. Musically they are more complex than the Two Part Inventions, and their purpose was most likely to take two-part counterpoint to the max. * Fugue 1 is a double fugue in E minor * Fugue 2 is a fugue in F major written as a da capo aria (ABA) * Fugue 3 in G major is light and dance-like * Fugue 4 in A minor is a fugue in strict counterpoint Ralph Sauer has once again done an extraordinary job of finding great music for our instrument and transcribing it in the most beautiful way possible. Appropriate for advanced performers. Each player has their own part as well as a study score. The 2nd part may be performed on a tenor with f-attachment or a bass trombone.

In this trombone duet, Süsser die Glocken nie klingen, the theme is presented in 4/4, which appears to be a rather unusual measure to be chosen for this Christmas carol. The Latin groove is to be played rather laid back throughout the entire piece. The variations of the theme alternate between the two voices so that the lead voice and the accompaniment merge into one another. Arranged by Eberhard Michaely.

--The Ten Duos for Cellos of Op. 53 are fertile ground for this new arrangement. --Ralph Sauer has chosen five of the pieces (12 minutes of music) that are suitable for two Trombones. --Both parts have an equally wide range (high D to low C) with liberal use of the valve register. However, alternative octaves are provided for those without an F-attachment.--For advanced performers, the Duos present a technical challenge for both players, are musically rewarding and worthy of recital material.

Unlike most duets, these pieces were designed to serve many purposes. First and foremost, they are intended to be fun to play and listen to, but each of them is challenging and filled with musical problems comparable to those found in professional playing situations. Some of the uses to which these duets might be put are: Developing sight reading skills. To this end the players are encouraged to vary the tempo, dynamics, phrasing as well as switch parts. Learning to recognize and interpret some of the most commonly used jazz figures. Developing a feel for swing. Developing facility and technique. Developing transpositional skills. The performer is encouraged to also use the duets for sight singing, studying the II/V7 and other formulaic patterns and in actual performance situations.
