This work collects together basic musical gestures, and while not aiming at completeness, the twelve movements nevertheless form a loose cycle. They are compositional studies, insofar as they explore the ultimate limits of musical density, but also instrumental studies in the traditional sense: each individual movement sets a precisely defined technical and intellectual task for the performer. Béla Bartók planned in 1939 to arrange for two violins and three violins his choral works (for egual voices). He was prevented from doing this by his early death. At the request of the Editio Musica Budapest, Endre Szervánszky has undertaken this task in 1971. His arrangements, which we are bringing out in two volumes, offer valuable material both to violin teaching and group music-making.

Composer and violinist János Lavotta (1764-1820), as a member of the ''virtuoso trio'' who played a great role in the history of Hungarian music, was one of the pioneers of verbunkos music. (The other two key players being János Bihari and Antal Csermák.) Although Lavotta s Violin Duos Op. 49 must have also been used for playing music at home, they show the composer's clear educational intent since the fourteen consecutive pieces gradually increase in difficulty in both technical and musical respects. The relatively short and undemanding melodies (which can be grasped by beginners), the sequence-like structure that makes practising individual technical elements possible, therhythmical-harmonic accompanying forms, as well as the temperately applied modulations are definitely suitable for beginner violinists to achieve significant progress in playing. According to music historian Mária Domokos, Lavotta's duos could have been included in the syllabus of any contemporary music school at the time. The first publication of Easy Duos - which came out on the 250th anniversary of the Lavotta's birth - was edited by János Dombóvári who provided the fingering and the necessary instructions for performance.

As far as we know Vivaldi wrote twenty trio sonatas. Several of these works are actually for two parts, as the continuo merely doubles one of the two solo instruments. In the titles of four of these trio sonatas ('Suonata da camera, a 2 violini anco senza basso se piace', meaning if desired the sonata can be played without the bass part) Vivaldi himself gave his approval to the omission of the third instrument. In the light of this, the present publication gives the four works in the form of violin duos.We recommend these three-movement sonatas, in a fast-slow-fast format, for violinists who are already advanced in their studies. 1. Sonata RV 702. Sonata RV 713. SonataRV 684. Sonata RV 77.

One of EMB s most successful composers and publishers, And-rás Soós, has devoted his latest volume to a special instrumental ensemble: three violins. No original works appear in it, in this collection, which aims at variety, we find transcriptions of choral works and piano and guitar pieces, etc. from the 14th to the 19th century. The main consideration in selecting the works was that the score should offer young violinists real chamber music, that is, if possible three equally important parts should share in the music-making.Für ein spezielles Instrumentalensemble, drei Violinen, stellte einer unserer erfolgreichsten Komponisten-Herausgeber, András Soós, seinen neuesten Band zusammen.

Nicola Mestrino (1748-1789) was employed for a time in the Esterházy court orchestra under the direction of Joseph Haydn. He later settled in Paris and became one of the most celebrated violin virtuosos of the period. He was also a composer, and one of his most successful works was this set of three violin duets which was published in no fewer than four contemporary editions in Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam and the German city of Offenbach. In these duets consisting of either three or two movements, the two violins have absolutely equal roles.

Charles Dancla (1817-1907) is considered to be the last great representative of the French Violin School. He knew, in a special way, how to implement the principle 'no music without technique, no technique without music' in his teaching material.
