The premiere of the chamber music work written at the end of 1987 was given in August 1989 in Manchester. With its fast-slow-fast sequence of movements and the manner of its formation this piece of about 17 minutes duration follows to some extent classical models. Characteristic of its musical expression is, however, an individual mixture of the varied recollections of genre and mood. The success of the composition has been proved in numerous performances.

An Album of Twenty French Songs arranged for Bassoon and Piano by Martin GattFauréâ??s poignant love song Après un rêve exists in many different transcriptions for various instruments (the most famous version perhaps being the one for cello and piano that Pablo Casals made in 1910), and provides the initial inspiration for this album of French songs transcribed for bassoon and piano. The bassoon is capable of a broad range of timbres and expression, and it is the lyrical, vocal quality of the instrument that Martin Gatt has always been attracted to. In both his performance and teaching, his emphasis is on the importance of what he calls â??vocalisingâ?? through the bassoon, and for him, music for the voice â?? especially art songs of the 19th and 20th centuries â?? has been a rich source of material for exploring the expressive tonal colours of the bassoon. The treasure trove of French art song from composers ranging from Claude Arrieu to Louis Vierne, not to mention the greats like Berlioz or Debussy or Ravel, has made the task of choosing which songs to include in this album a difficult one. In the end, Martin has settled on eight composers who have produced some of the most appealing music in the genre â?? Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921), Georges Bizet (1838-1875), Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894), Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Henri Duparc (1848-1933), Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Rather than grouping by composer, the songs are set out in a way that contrasts different emotional worlds and sentiments, from the vibrant exuberance of Chabrierâ??s Lâ??île heureuse to the gentle melancholy of Poulencâ??s Mais mourir. These â??songs without wordsâ? for the bassoon, clearly demonstrate the instrumentâ??s cantabile qualities, varied nuances, and wide-ranging emotional possibilities.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for bassoon and piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains, and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.

Commissioned by South West Arts, this work was first performed by Michael Hancock and Laurence Perkins in February 1993 for Elizabeth's Music Society in the English coastal resort of Seaton. Sonata for bassoon and piano is one of Swiders first works for a wind instrument. It was written most probably in the years 1953-1954, under a clear influence of neo-classicist stylistics. The only documented performance took place on 5th May 1955 in Katowice, or Stalinogrod, as such was the name of that city in those days. The first part of Sonata is written in a form of scherzando of a light and witty character, where the composer fully uses the facture and bassoons sound potential. The second part, full of meditation and cantilena, bears a particular expression of lower registers of the instrument. Part three is a traditional minuet in moderato tempo, with stylised folk elements in the middle fragment. The last part resumes the scherzo form, capped by a cadenza written by Marek Baranski, in which attempting to imitate the language of Jozef Swider's compositions that include numerous elements of a synthetic finale he included most music concepts outlined in the entire Sonata.

Impromptu for Bassoon and Piano is an energetic, lyrical solo, written for Smith's daughter, Pam, and easily accessible for a high school or college bassoonist. Based on a lighthearted melody, the solo has some technical passages based on arpeggios, challenging rhythmic passages in Smith's signature 7/8 and 9/8 bars and a complementary piano accompaniment. Bassoonists will enjoy performing this work which explores the entire range of the instrument, challenging the bassoonist to portray both expressive and spirited styles.

“Born in Toulouse, Marcel Bitsch (1921-2011) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire before becoming a professor of counterpoint at the institution. As an exceptionally versatile composer, Bitsch has composed orchestral works, chamber works and numerous pieces and studies for wind instruments. Concertino is a sublime addition to the Bassoon repertoire. Suited to advanced level bassoonists, Bitsch's Concertino contains a range of exciting musical aspects, including varied articulation, complex rhythms, irregular phrasing, exploited tonality and much variation in dynamics, tempo and performance directions. The diversity of musical elements included in this Marcel Bitsch Concertino for Bassoon and Piano is outstanding, creating a necessary addition to the advanced bassoonist's repertoire.â€.

There comes a time in life when your parents have passed on. What we are left with is the memories of their love, guidance, support, and the happy times together. Last August when my mum sadly passed away, I wrote an Elegy as part of my grieving. However, as a family we had happy times together and it seemed only right to compose a work which would celebrate this. So, I added a first and last movement to create a short concertino. The movements are: Prelude: Peter John Connell: The Cheeky Chap Elegy: Mavis June Connell (Time To Remember) Rondo: Family Fun (Adrian Connell) Performance note The work can also be performed with accompaniment of string orchestra and harp using the set of parts for the version for clarinet and orchestra (E.D. 88833).
