A Study in all Keys for Bassoon, (transcribed by Martin Gatt from Study in all Keys for Flute by Louis Drouet)..The first edition of this work was published by Phylloscopus Publications in 2000.Drouet’s Study in all Keys is typically virtuosic and technically demanding, and well suited to the flute. It extends over 365 bars, moving through all the tonalities, as the title suggests. There is no comparable exercise in the bassoon repertoire, and Martin Gatt has provided a transcription of this teaching aid for the benefit of post-Grade 8 students.Louis Drouet (1792 – 1873) was a famous flautist, born in Amsterdam. It is recorded that he played at the Paris Conservatoire, aged seven, and that he was a composition pupil of Méhul and Reicha. He toured with his father in the early years of the 19th century, and was appointed court soloist to the King of Holland in 1808. A similar appointment with the Emperor of France followed in 1811. He was a very successful performer and when the monarchy was restored in France, he became first flute in the Royal Chapel. In 1817, he appeared in London to great acclaim. He spent three years in Naples as Director of the Royal Opera, then disappeared from view until Mendelssohn persuaded him to return to the concert circuit. Chen Yiâs ELEGY was composed in 2020 both as her own response to the covid pandemic, and in conjunction with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestraâs series of solo commissions for their performers offered through the SPCOâs website. Musically inspired by a common bond with SPCO oboist Cassie Pilgrimâs cultural heritage from southern China, Chen Yi drew from Cantonese folk music materials, whose Yifan mode is particularly sad and mournful. ELEGY was originally composed for solo oboe, and transcribed for solo bassoon by the composer.

Metamorphoses after Britten was written for Melinda Maxwell, for UYMP's Signals volume of new music for Oboe. It was first performed by Melinda at York University on 24th November 2010. I - A Mountain II - Fixation III - Flowers IV - Fountains Metamorphoses after Britten by philipvenables Metamorphoses after Britten are just that: four miniatures, each inspired by one of Benjamin Britten’s Six Metamorphoses after Ovid for solo oboe. Each movement, over its short course, transforms gradually from one thing to another, ending, with the exception of Fountains, in a short, cathartic coda. Some of the movements also take specific musical elements from Britten’s pieces. I verymuch viewed these pieces as musical Haiku, and in that sense I hope they embody a sense of peace, brevity and simplicity. The oboe version of Metamorphoses after Britten is dedicated to Melinda Maxwell. The saxophone version of Metamorphoses after Britten, with an additional movement, is dedicated to Vicki and Andrew Vaughan - Philip Venables .
