This chart is from the I REMEMBER BILL - a tribute to Bill Evans CD arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky! All of these incredible pieces require a mature band, soloists and woodwind doublers. Bob has created an absolutely thrilling 12 minute work, inspired by his Celtic roots (Towednack is a small area in Cornwall, England). The Celtic influence is heard in the triple-meter settings and the interlude which reflects back on a Riverdance style of music. Tenor sax is featured. Very much in the genre of his Metheny/Mays charts of the past. Commissioned by Riverside Community College (CA) Performed at the August, 1999 Kenton Sounds concert in Los Angeles. No w.w. doubles. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes and aux. perc.).

Every once in a while a melody is written that words cannot convey and only the soul understands. Master-of-melodies, Pat Metheny, did just that in his composition of Tell Her You Saw Me, and Bob Curnow magnificently transformed it into a majestic big band arrangement. A ballad throughout that slowly builds in intensity; this piece utilizes woodwind doubles and flugelhorns with a short, written-out piano solo up front. If you are looking to provide a moving ballad for your audiences, then this is it. 5-4-4-4.

Dan has created a wonderful Rock Ballad, with a nifty, repeating vamp figure, that can be played by even the most inexperienced players. He has managed to do this without compromising the music. The chart is wonderful! The melody is stated by 2 Altos, Trumpet and Trombone in unison, and it grooves on from there. VERY limited ranges (1st Tpt. written G top of staff) Solos for Alto Sax, Tenor Sax and Trumpet. Solos are written out, or they can be improvised as well. Your band will love it! 5-4-4-4.

Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

Rich DeRosa, Professor of Jazz Composition at the University of North Texas, has composed a fascinating, brooding, and pensive melody of 'Mixed Emotions.' Set in a very contemporary feel with lush harmonies and reasonable brass ranges (highest note for trumpet is a written B), this flugelhorn feature also includes wonderfully written ensemble passages and will enchant your band and audiences alike. Originally recorded by the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2014, this piece requires woodwind doubles (clarinet). 5-4-4-4.

Another terrific chart from Kenton's Contemporary Concepts LP. Features trombone throughout this fast-paced, Cool Bop chart in the unmistakable style of the late, great Gerry Mulligan. Use this with 3 other Sierra publications to do a Mulligan Tribute at your next concert. 5-5-5-4.

Talk about a Flag-Waver !!! The Maynard Ferguson Band recorded this on their Footpath Cafe CD. The chart asks every player in the band to wail through a very hip and challenging be-bop line in unison. There are ensemble breaks here and there for very dramatic effects, and plenty of blowing space on the rhythm changes. You'll love doing this chart because you can really show off your band. 5-4-4-3.

This is a lovely, cool, easy-swing chart that explores linear material as written for and recorded by the North Texas One O'clock Lab Band (Lab 2013). Flute and bass clarinet doubles are required, and the drummer is featured throughout with brushes. This piece has the feel of a theme and variations, and contains very rich harmonies and voicings. 5-4-4-4.

Your band will really swing with this tasty chart that lays right in the groove. Every section gets to play the melody while easy dorian solo changes over a blues style 12 bar format makes the open solo section approachable by any instrument in the band. The guitar helper part includes tablature and chord shape/performance suggestions. A written piano solo and optional vibes and vocal parts enhance the performance possibilities. Cool chart!
