Sierra Music is excited to provide another original from Bob Curnow! 'The Secret of the Blues' is a fresh, new look at the blues with interesting altered changes, dynamics that move from the softest to the strongest possible, and an attitude that will get any audience fired up. This sultry, swinging, screaming blues arrangement is perfect for featuring many soloists (there is space for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, and piano) before the ensemble shines in a dynamic-building, roaring section prior to returning to the melody. The highest trumpet note is a written E. This chart is a must-have! 5-4-4-4.

This one is way cool, but the energy it creates is hot. It's a medium tempo swinger in a minor key, reminiscent of some of the great Buddy Rich tunes. Just when you think you know where it's going, the harmonies change and lead to something new. The open section for solos of your choice is built upon very basic minor Blues changes. Plenty of dynamic contrasts, with a very soft sax soli leading into a shout chorus that really roars.

This is a great, HOT chart from Maynard's Dream Band book. Beautifully written, with tenor and trumpet solos. This is the one everyone has been asking for! Included in the new Smithsonian recording of big band jazz. Let your band sink their teeth into this one! Full score/parts for 5-4-4-3.

Bill Holman, well known for his solo features, originally arranged this iconic tenor saxophone feature, 'Out of Nowhere,' for Bill Perkins and the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the mid '50s. Set as an up-tempo swing, the tenor saxophone is featured throughout and has lots of solo space to make this tune its own. Combine that with a cookin' rhythm section and great swinging ensemble passages, this chart is really happening! This new Finale edition provides cleaner, more correct parts and is easier to read with better page turns. This 'pro' version is the original chart requiring 10-brass. Brass ranges are reasonable in both versions (highest note for trumpet is a written D). 5-5-5-3.

Did someone say, shuffle?? From the stop-time intro to a poppin' shout chorus, this Howard Rowe chart is maximum excitement! Subway Shuffle is an excellent showcase for soloists and ensemble alike and builds to a rousing finale!

This is a new edition (Finale computer notation) of this lovely bossa nova tune. Curnow uses flugelhorns to create a warm, lush, lyrical melody that floats in and out of various counter lines. There is a tenor sax solo which is followed by a marvelous full ensemble passage. The melody returns and takes things out to the end. Very reasonable ranges (1st tpt. high Db only) and rhythms make this very playable by most bands.

Includes an open solo section for the soloists of your choosing and suggested solos are included. A unison ensemble chorus leads to a rousing finale that will have audiences saying wow! Terrific concert and contest selection!

This piece has been in the catalog for a while, but it has been totally recomposed and notated in Finale. It now comes with a full score (and parts). It was written for Stan Kenton, and it features a written piano solo throughout the piece. This is a slow ballad, written in the Kenton tradition. If you're looking for a piano feature in ballad style, this will work very well for you.

One of the great pieces written for the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra, founded and conducted by Stan Kenton. Four french horns are essential, along with 4 trumpets, 5 trombones and woodwinds. Exciting and challenging music. Recorded on the L.A. Neophonic Orchestra LP. Woodwinds require 2 piccolo, 2 clarinets and bass saxophone (baritone saxophone opt. part included). Written for and recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Birdland Dream Band, this chart by Willie Maiden is uncharacteristically easy to play for the band due to very reasonable brass ranges. However, this is a 2 tenor saxophone and 2 trombone feature throughout. While quite a bit of the solos are written out, there is also a lot of space for improvisation. This is one of Willie's most delightful pieces scored for Maynard. 5-4-4-3.
SKU: M7.SMP-1055
This is a fast-paced, swinging chart, with lots of solo space for trumpet and baritone saxophone. There is also plenty of high-powered ensemble playing throughout. This edited version is created from the original parts, but Maynard's solo and lead parts are written into the standard trumpet section. Extra parts are also included for traditional instrumentation. This chart is one of the most recorded pieces in Maynard Ferguson's book and usually served as his opener with the Dream Band..

This is a gorgeous ballad arranged by Willie Maiden for the great Maynard Ferguson Orchestra and is included in The Complete Roulette Recordings' (Mosaic). There is wonderful ensemble writing that is playable by most bands, and also features a short improvised solo for the tenor saxophone. With a strong, Maynard-like player for this lead trumpet feature (written out), your band will have a truly magnificent, knock-out ballad to add to any concert program. 5-4-4-3.

Talk about a Flag-Waver !!! The Maynard Ferguson Band recorded this on their Footpath Cafe CD. The chart asks every player in the band to wail through a very hip and challenging be-bop line in unison. There are ensemble breaks here and there for very dramatic effects, and plenty of blowing space on the rhythm changes. You'll love doing this chart because you can really show off your band. 5-4-4-3.
SKU: M7.SMP-1071
As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra on the Newport album, this clever Willie Maiden arrangement is set in three sections - ballad, medium swing and fast swing. There is solo space for baritone saxophone (written out), bass (written out), tenor saxophone, trumpet, alto saxophone, and lead trumpet (a la Maynard). While this chart will certainly take some work to pull off, it will absolutely be worth it in the end! You band and audiences will love this great rendition of Old Man River! 5-5-4-3.
