Originally composed by Bill Holman for the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Bob Curnow's arrangement of 'Solos' scores the melody in the unison saxophone section and is written for 8-brass. A straight-ahead, swinging chart based on 'rhythm changes,' this is a hip, angular melody that sets up some powerful ensemble passages. There is lots of solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and piano. If you are looking for a chart with a memorable melody and a vehicle to feature your outstanding soloists, this is the one! 5-4-4-3 (opt. guitar).

This is a fast, swing chart that is a feature for tenor saxophone. The soloist gets to blow in a free-form setting, or the soloing can be done in time with the rhythm section. The rest of the band plays a neat, tight introduction to the improvisation, and they follow the solo with the same swinging, nifty music as the front end. This is a clever, hip, piece that makes a great addition to any program..... especially if your brass section needs a rest. Les recorded this with his wonderful band on Live at Typhoon. 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back. You and your band will love this chart. This requires clarinet doubles on the top 3 saxophone parts and bass clarinet on the baritone part. There is also a mallet part (marimba, vibes and xylophone). 5-4-4-5.

Dan has created a wonderful Rock Ballad, with a nifty, repeating vamp figure, that can be played by even the most inexperienced players. He has managed to do this without compromising the music. The chart is wonderful! The melody is stated by 2 Altos, Trumpet and Trombone in unison, and it grooves on from there. VERY limited ranges (1st Tpt. written G top of staff) Solos for Alto Sax, Tenor Sax and Trumpet. Solos are written out, or they can be improvised as well. Your band will love it! 5-4-4-4.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This edited version maintains the integrity of Oliver's original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 5-4-4-3.

Get out those plungers and let the fun begin! This hot chart has a great uptempo swing feel and the novel plunger effects in the brass give it a unique sound! Includes an open solo section for the soloist of your choice and written solo suggestions are also furnished. Range are reasonable and Larry's great scoring gives it a big solid sound even with bands of limited instrumentation. The concluding shout chorus starts soft, then brings down the house. A major league swinger which gives the whole band a chance to shine. Lots of ensemble kicks with space for solo fills by the drummer and a nice solo section for any sax soloists of your choosing. The trombones have a nice soli and the whole band has interesting parts. A great opener for any concert or contest performance by good bands. It really is Twice As Cool.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Heidi' is the 3rd movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. A gorgeous solo feature for alto saxophone throughout, this piece builds from a quiet beginning to a very powerful point (a 'Bolero' type of tension as the piece develops) before it diminishes to a quiet ending. This 'edited' version is in a lower key, has a shorter solo section and simpler brass ranges, making it more playable for both the soloist and the ensemble while still maintaining the integrity of Oliver's beautiful ballad. 5-4-4-3.

Pat plays this at just about every concert of the Group. It is on the First Circle LP. The featured solo is played on Alto Saxophone. This is a two chorus version in the original key, a much more demanding chart than the first version published by Sierra. Your alto soloist will love the chance to play this one. (10 brass) As recorded on Bob Curnow's L.A. Big Band,The Music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays.

Carl Strommen, one of the most prolific educational writers, has penned the funk chart that students will love. The chord structure is blues in F which can feature any of your soloists. This composition features Carl's trademark rhythmless soli sections. There is a pretty fat chance that this will be a big seller for Carl. Solos are not written out for these F blues changes.
