This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! This one is way cool, but the energy it creates is hot. It's a medium tempo swinger in a minor key, reminiscent of some of the great Buddy Rich tunes. Just when you think you know where it's going, the harmonies change and lead to something new. The open section for solos of your choice is built upon very basic minor Blues changes. Plenty of dynamic contrasts, with a very soft sax soli leading into a shout chorus that really roars.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Berlin Bei Nacht' is the 4th movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. Set in an up-tempo fashion, this Oliver Nelson's 1971 forward-thinking original starts out with an in-your-face swing unison line played by the saxophones and the trumpets, with the trombones and rhythm section providing the undercurrent. It then moves into a half-time Latin feel before settling into a funk/rock blues solo section (trumpet, or as you choose).
