As commissioned (and recorded) by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany, this is an extended arrangement based on a gorgeous melody by Pat Metheny. The saxophone players double on flute (sax 1), clarinets (sax 2-4) and bass clarinet (sax 5). There is solo space for piano, tenor sax and trombone, as the chart moves from a rubato ballad, to a bossa feel, to a rock ballad feel, and back to the rubato again. This is a highly, emotionally charged piece which makes a wonderful addition to any program. Limited brass ranges. The chart also includes an interweaving of Metheny's pensive melody Tell Her You Saw Me. As the title implies, this chart does not rest for a moment. It moves from one tempo to another, doubling up and then doubling in tempo again. Needless to say, Stop/Go is an exciting excursion into the very hip mind of Bill Holman. The chart requires soprano saxophone on the lead part. Holman's humor comes to the fore in this fascinating arrangement. 5-4-4-3.

Bob has created an absolutely thrilling 12 minute work, inspired by his Celtic roots (Towednack is a small area in Cornwall, England). The Celtic influence is heard in the triple-meter settings and the interlude which reflects back on a Riverdance style of music. Tenor sax is featured. Very much in the genre of his Metheny/Mays charts of the past. Commissioned by Riverside Community College (CA) Performed at the August, 1999 Kenton Sounds concert in Los Angeles. No w.w. doubles. This is a fast, swing chart that is a feature for tenor saxophone. The soloist gets to blow in a free-form setting, or the soloing can be done in time with the rhythm section. The rest of the band plays a neat, tight introduction to the improvisation, and they follow the solo with the same swinging, nifty music as the front end. This is a clever, hip, piece that makes a great addition to any program..... especially if your brass section needs a rest. Les recorded this with his wonderful band on Live at Typhoon. 5-4-4-4.

Bill Holman's music never disappoints, and 'Introduction to an Ending' is no exception! Originally written for and recorded on the Charlie Barnet Big Band 1967 album, this straight-ahead blues tune features the saxophone section with a long, wonderful soli that grows for over 70 bars before ripping into the solo section. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, and drums. Filled with energy and excitement, the shout chorus comes roaring in to take the tune out with a bang. As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. Bob Curnow's arrangement of Metheny/Mays' composition Stranger In Town hits you in the face right from the start and ends in the same manner. This Oliver Nelson melody was originally recorded with a small group. Bob Curnow took this great tune and arranged it for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has quite a bluesy feel to it while providing a nice variation to the standard blues changes that you might not expect. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this pro (original) version, you will find Oliver Nelson's amazing solo transcribed and arranged as a trumpet soli. As usual, Lennie does a great job arranging it, with terrific section work and limited ranges for the brass (written high D for 1st Tpt). There is a nice, lengthy solo for Baritone Sax. 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

Rich DeRosa, Professor of Jazz Composition at the University of North Texas, has written an exquisite ballad in dedication to Neil Slater (UNT Jazz Studies chair and director of One O'Clock Lab Band, retired). Originally recorded by the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band on their album Lab 2015, 'Neil' features the piano with a lot of room to improvise, combined with gorgeous, lush, legato ensemble passages. Quite playable by most bands, this chart has very limited brass ranges (highest note for trumpet is a written G) and will be a fantastic addition to any concert program! This 'edited' version is exactly like the 'pro' version except it only requires 8-brass. 5-4-4-3.

This beautiful arrangement of the lovely popular Michel Legrand ballad was originally scored for the Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen. It is an alto saxophone feature throughout. The entire solo is written out (with changes provided to allow for improvisation). The accompanying band parts are very simple to play, making this chart accessible to most middle school bands. 5-4-4-4.

Stan Kenton had a certain touch in his arranging that stood out. He took a simple, slow-swinging approach to this great Neal Hefti tune, and it was one of the most popular charts played by the band in the 1970's. Piano takes the melody, while the trombones set the harmonic and rhythmic groove. This is a wonderful piece to program, becasue it is so different than most charts. 5-5-5-3.
