Also known as Patterns For Orchestra (as recorded on the Verve jazz masters 48 CD), this is one of Nelson's very interesting charts. It has a very angular, exciting melody in a brisk swing tempo, and lots of solo space for trombone (as recorded by J.J. Johnson). The solo space could be filled by piano or any other instrument as well. The instrumentation has been converted to 5-4-4-4, a standard big band.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).

This chart is not for the faint-of-heart. It moves at a fast, swinging pace, and it captures the spirit of Parker's classic bebop tune, including the humor. As recorded on the new CD The Bill Holman Band Live, this chart allows for solos by tenor sax, trombone and piano. This is the whole package ..... outstanding ensemble writing and lots of solo space. This should be in every big band library. Flute doubles (short passages) on alto and tenor 1 parts. 5-4-4-4.

This is a fast-paced, swinging chart, with lots of solo space for trumpet and baritone saxophone. There is also plenty of high-powered ensemble playing throughout. This edited version is created from the original parts, but Maynard's solo and lead parts are written into the standard trumpet section. Extra parts are also included for traditional instrumentation. This chart is one of the most recorded pieces in Maynard Ferguson's book and usually served as his opener with the Dream Band..

Another amazing, exciting chart has been added to the Pat Metheny Series! Bob Curnow's arrangement of Metheny/Mays' composition Stranger In Town hits you in the face right from the start and ends in the same manner. With typical Metheny/Mays flavor, there is a musical shift in the middle as solo space for tenor saxophone emerges, followed by a full ensemble interlude which then takes us to a peak ending. Originally recorded by PMG on their album We Live Here, Curnow has once again masterfully arranged this tune to fit perfectly in a big band setting! 5-4-4-4.

If you are looking for a modern arrangement with a classic feel, Drew Zaremba has done just that with Dave Brubeck's 'Cassandra.' Recorded by the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band on their CD Lab 2014, Drew uses theme and variation to take this marvelous, swinging melody into challenging, extensive and exciting places. In addition to featuring the depth of your ensemble, including woodwind doubles, lots of counterpoint, and tempo and style changes, there is also solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet. This chart is the real deal! 5-4-4-4.

This is a beautiful, lush, straight-eighth ballad on the popular Cole Porter tune Easy To Love. Arranged by Lennie Niehaus, this short (and quite dancable) chart exemplifies the Kenton-esque warm and rich ensemble sound we all love. There is solo space for piano (written out) and for alto saxophone. Originally recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on their album Sophisticated Approach, this popular tune out of the Great American Songbook will put a smile on any audience's face. 5-5-5-3.

As recorded on Tonight Show Band, Vol. 2 (Amherst), this chart won a Grammy for best big band arrangement. Holman took this great standard, put it in 3-4, and wrote scintillating counter lines that weave their way through the whole arrangement. Solo space for trumpet, and roaring ensemble passages make this chart something that should be in every big band library in the world. 5-5-4-3.

This is another great Oliver Nelson chart (it swings like crazy!). It starts in 3/4 and then goes to 4/4 and has a wonderful feel and flow as it moves through the different sections. The piece has very limited brass ranges with some optional octave writing in the trumpet 1 part. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This big band arrangement was adapted by Bob Curnow from the original small band version as recorded on Oliver Nelson Plays Michelle (Impulse). 5-4-4-4.

As written for and performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band, here is the long-missing chart that Holman wrote to feature The Great One..... Buddy Rich. It is a terrific, swinging chart with solo space, not only for drums, but also for tenor sax, trumpet and trombone. This is another superb chart by Holman, who has contributed to virtually every big band library on the jazz scene. This is a wonderful piece! 5-4-4-4.

As commissioned (and recorded) by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany, this is an extended arrangement based on a gorgeous melody by Pat Metheny. The saxophone players double on flute (sax 1), clarinets (sax 2-4) and bass clarinet (sax 5). There is solo space for piano, tenor sax and trombone, as the chart moves from a rubato ballad, to a bossa feel, to a rock ballad feel, and back to the rubato again. This is a highly, emotionally charged piece which makes a wonderful addition to any program. Limited brass ranges. The chart also includes an interweaving of Metheny's pensive melody Tell Her You Saw Me. The CD on which this piece is recorded is Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

This is a wonderful chart, an old tune in a new dress, as only Bill Holman can do it. It's the exact chart as recorded by the terrific Charlie Barnet Big Band. The tempo is bright, a swinging excursion into the clever writing of Holman. Solo space for piano, alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. There is a great sax section soli and the usual, wonderful, roaring ensemble shout choruses. A big finish ends an amazing chart. 5-5-4-4 (4 tpts. work just as well).

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra on their album Berlin Dialogue for Orchestra, Checkpoint Charlie is some of Nelson's most creative writing. Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound. There is plenty of solo space for trombone to stretch out, giving a great contrast from the full ensemble sections to the lone soloist with rhythm section. This edited version maintains the integrity of Oliver's original recording while simplifying some of the rhythms, making brass ranges more accessible, and providing solo space for tenor, trumpet, or trombone. 5-4-4-3.

The quintessential Flag-Waver (as recorded on the 1959 album The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess, featuring the Bill Potts Big Band), this one is a real romp through a happy tune and a brilliant chart, arranged to feature everyone in the band. Some only have 4 bars, others have more blowing space, but everyone gets their chance in the spotlight. Great fun, great music and a great chart! 5-5-5-4.

Here is a terrific medium-tempo shuffle chart that the Buddy Rich Band played all the time. It was recorded on the Swingin' New Big Band album (CD available from Sierra Music), and has wide open blowing space in the blues format. A great shout chorus finishes off this exciting, swinging chart from Oliver Nelson. 5-4-4-3.

Based on a traditional Native American song, Fred Sturm has created a truly amazing masterpiece capturing the beauty of the melody with the intricacies and creativity of a big band. Set in 15/8, this odd-metered tune features flute up front, with solo space for piano and bass, and plenty of powerful ensemble passages. If your band is up to it, you will not regret performing Pueblo de Taos, and your audiences will be delighted with such a bold, fresh selection. 5-4-4-4Flute/Alto Sax 1 (Solo), Alto Sax 2, Tenor Sax 1, Tenor Sax 2, Baritone Sax, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 1, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 2, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 3, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Trombone 3, Bass Trombone 4, Piano (Solo), Guitar, Bass (Solo), Drums.
