Sierra continues to find the lost treasures from Maynard Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band Library. Willie scored this Miles Davis classic to feature four different saxophone players. A typical chart for that time, it covers the whole dynamic range with exciting, swinging music. Printed as originally scored (4-4-2-3), but including extra parts for a standard 5-4-4-4 instrumentation.

This arrangement of I Hope In Time a Change Will Come came about through a desire to hear/play more than one chorus of this stunningly beautiful melody by Oliver Nelson. The basis for this new arrangement was Nelson's original chart, but this one is two choruses, not one. Part of the second chorus can be improvised. The soloist throughout is soprano saxophone (could be played on tenor saxophone or trumpet if you so desire). This is a slow, gorgeous ballad that will thrill your audiences. 5-4-4-3.

Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.

The chart everyone has been waiting for!! Eight minutes of amazing, dynamic, exciting sounds! This arrangement was commissioned and recorded by the SWR Big Band of Stuttgart, Germany. It is, of course, based on the centerpiece of the wildly popular show. Everytime this chart was performed in live concerts in Germany (and elsewhere), the audience just erupted with applause and standing ovations. This isn't an easy chart to play, but it is well worth the effort (similar to The First Circle in that respect). All ranges are fairly reasonable, with the 1st Tpt. part topping out at a written high E. This is recorded on the highly acclaimed CD Towednack, Bob Curnow and the SWR Big Band (available from Sierra Music). 5-4-4-4.

This chart was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the CD I Told You So. This is a rip-roaring, swinging chart. It starts with trombones and rhythm setting the time with simple halfnote figures. The saxes and trumpets join in with a swinging, exciting series of lines, and away we go ! One of the great shout choruses of all time! Features solo space for tenor sax, trombone, piano and drums. A great closer for your programs. 5-5-4-4.

As written for and performed by the Buddy Rich Big Band, here is the long-missing chart that Holman wrote to feature Buddy on Drums and Pat LaBarbera on Tenor Sax. What a great chart! It is set in a quasi Rock Feel which shifts to Swing and back again. This is a very high-energy, exciting chart, and Buddy played it all the time! Your band will eat this one up. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, 'Berlin Bei Nacht' is the 4th movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. Set in an up-tempo fashion, this Oliver Nelson's 1971 forward-thinking original starts out with an in-your-face swing unison line played by the saxophones and the trumpets, with the trombones and rhythm section providing the undercurrent. It then moves into a half-time Latin feel before settling into a funk/rock blues solo section (trumpet, or as you choose). This exciting and unique arrangement will be a favorite for your band and audiences alike! 5-4-4-3 (opt. 5th trombone).
