As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Adventures In Standards, this is a medium-swing chart on a great tune. Lennie uses a neat vamp in the trombones to offset the melody in the saxes. The full ensemble then kicks off a trombone solo. The full band plays a great shout chorus out to the end. There is an optional ending (the recorded as opposed to the original). Kenton and Niehaus at their best! 5-5-5-3 (can be played with 8 brass).

Billy Byers, known for his wildly successful arrangements for the Count Basie Orchestra, provided them with some of their best music ever performed and recorded. Originally recorded on the album Frankly Basie, 'South of the Border' has it all - Basie piano solos (written out), roaring ensemble passages, a swinging saxophone soli, and some compelling key changes. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, trumpet, and piano. If you want your band and audiences to experience to joy of Basie, then this chart is a must! 5-4-4-4.

As recorded on Portrait of Shorty, (including the best of West Coast jazz musicians such as Herb Geller, Bill Holman, Jack Montrose, Frank Rosolino, Conrad Gozzo, Conte Candoli and others) this is a medium tempo Swing chart that has a very unique, catchy sound to it. Here is a free swinging, remarkable chart from a new writer for Sierra. Allan Ganley's reputation and legacy in England drew our attention to this marvelous arrangement of One Morning in May. The arrangement is recorded on the CD June Time (Vocalion), and stands among the best versions out there. Starting with a soft, swinging ensemble, the chart moves into space for blowing for tenor saxophone and trumpet, returning to the initial feel with a wonderful, warm ending. All brass ranges are very moderate. This will be a great addition to any jazz band library. 5-4-4-4.

There are a few charts from this library which are very playable by any reasonably well developed jazz ensemble. This surely is one of the best! Holman created a beautifully layered piece, based on the Rhythm changes. This is one of the most popular charts in the entire Kenton Library. Solo space for alto, tenor, trombone and trumpet. Recorded on the Kenton Showcase LP in 1954. (This music is available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.) 5-5-5-3.

Holman has done a few arrangements of this tune, and this one may well be the best. Bill wrote this chart for the great Woody Herman Orchestra. It is written in a very bright swing tempo, and there is solo space for alto sax, tenor sax and trumpet. This chart has great line writing (no surprise there) and powerful, swinging ensemble shout choruses. Your band will really love playing this one. 5-5-4-3.

Bill Holman wrote some of the best music played by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and Boop Boo Be Doop is surely one of those charts. The melody is scored for four horns within the big band setting, and those four horns (alto, tenor, trumpet, trombone) are also the featured soloists. As recorded on The Concepts Era - Live!, this chart represents Holman's ability to write swinging, exciting music for big band. 5-5-5-3.

This chart is destined to become a best-seller because of its unique and exciting format ... an orchestration of Jelly Roll Morton's original recording of one of his most famous compositions. The arranger has successfully captured the spirit of the '20's with the modern big band. Scored for 5 woodwinds (incl. clarinet and 2 soprano saxes) 6 brass and 4 rhythm, this is one piece that your band and audiences will ask for again and again. 5-3-3-4.

Four wonderful tunes.... Eager Beaver, Dynaflow, Opus in Chartreuse and Artistry in Rhythm are included in this medley. Curnow put on paper what the band used to play to close most concerts or dances in the later years. Perfect for a Kenton Tribute Concert when you want to end with the best loved hits of this band. Fairly easy to play for most bands (In fact, the idea was to rest the trumpet section for a while.) 5-5-5-4.

The Stan Kenton Orchestra was always an ideal showcase for the outstanding soloists within its ranks. This piece was written to feature Frank Rosolino on trombone. Absolutely the best! A trombone feature throughout. Recorded on the Kenton New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm CD. 5-5-5-4.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Live at Brigham Young University, this may well be Willie's best chart done for Stan. Maiden uses a latin feel, the lush sound of the trombones and saxophones and the exciting energy of the trumpets and rhythm section to create a superb arrangement of this very special melody. Solos for piano, trombone, and alto saxophone. 5-5-5-3.

The Maynard Ferguson Band performed a lot of Abene's charts over the years. This chart is an excellent example of Abene's very musical approach to a great jazz standard. Very reasonable ranges throughout. Features tenor sax, trumpet and trombone solos. Destined to be a best-seller! Printed as originally scored (4-4-2-3), but including extra parts for a standard 5-4-4-4 instrumentation. This one burns!
