As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back. You and your band will love this chart. This requires clarinet doubles on the top 3 saxophone parts and bass clarinet on the baritone part. This is another great Oliver Nelson chart (it swings like crazy!). It starts in 3/4 and then goes to 4/4 and has a wonderful feel and flow as it moves through the different sections. The piece has very limited brass ranges with some optional octave writing in the trumpet 1 part. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This big band arrangement was adapted by Bob Curnow from the original small band version as recorded on Oliver Nelson Plays Michelle (Impulse). 5-4-4-4.

As the title implies, this chart does not rest for a moment. It moves from one tempo to another, doubling up and then doubling in tempo again. Needless to say, Stop/Go is an exciting excursion into the very hip mind of Bill Holman. The chart requires soprano saxophone on the lead part. Holman's humor comes to the fore in this fascinating arrangement. 5-4-4-3.

As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra on New Sounds of Maynard Ferguson, This Willie Maiden arrangement takes a great tune and puts it in an up-tempo swing setting. The chart has a bop-like melody performed as a duet by the alto saxophone and trumpet at the beginning, and then moves into the ensemble. There is a solo for alto saxophone, followed by a roaring shout chorus. There is some high trumpet work (a la Maynard), with optional lower notes included. As always, Willie gives us another incredible arrangement sure to be loved by all audiences! 5-4-4-3.

Hip and cool doesn't have to take a lot of rehearsal time and hard work - at least not with this chart. The ranges are conservative and the rhythms are basic, but you'd never know it from the big and full sound. An open solo section for any instrument on very basic chord changes, plus lots of hard driving ensemble writing make this one a true winner.

Holman has done a few arrangements of this tune, and this one may well be the best. Bill wrote this chart for the great Woody Herman Orchestra. It is written in a very bright swing tempo, and there is solo space for alto sax, tenor sax and trumpet. This chart has great line writing (no surprise there) and powerful, swinging ensemble shout choruses. Your band will really love playing this one. 5-5-4-3.
