This is a beautiful, lush, straight-eighth ballad on the popular Cole Porter tune Easy To Love. Arranged by Lennie Niehaus, this short (and quite dancable) chart exemplifies the Kenton-esque warm and rich ensemble sound we all love. There is solo space for piano (written out) and for alto saxophone. Originally recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on their album Sophisticated Approach, this popular tune out of the Great American Songbook will put a smile on any audience's face. 5-5-5-3.

Here is a slow, gutty, down-home type of blues written for and recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the Adventures In Blues album. There is open solo space for tenor, trumpet and piano. Once the solos are over, the full ensemble comes roaring in to take the chart to a strong, sensational ending. Your audiences will love this tune! 5-5-5-3.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Live at Brigham Young University, this may well be Willie's best chart done for Stan. Maiden uses a latin feel, the lush sound of the trombones and saxophones and the exciting energy of the trumpets and rhythm section to create a superb arrangement of this very special melody. Solos for piano, trombone, and alto saxophone. 5-5-5-3.

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Viva-Kenton, this delightful Latin chart has solo space for tenor saxophone and features a very hip melody by Gene Roland. Four wonderful tunes.... Eager Beaver, Dynaflow, Opus in Chartreuse and Artistry in Rhythm are included in this medley. Curnow put on paper what the band used to play to close most concerts or dances in the later years. Perfect for a Kenton Tribute Concert when you want to end with the best loved hits of this band. Fairly easy to play for most bands (In fact, the idea was to rest the trumpet section for a while.) 5-5-5-4.

This is another of the many wonderful charts arranged by Niehaus for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. A splendid rendition of a great standard, and it swings like crazy! It contains all of the elements so associated with the Kenton band. Wonderfully inventive writing which at first states the melody with a small band. 5-5-5-3 (edited to be played without mellophoniums and can be played with 8 brass or 10).

This chart was originally written for Charlie Parker to perform with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Eventually it was recorded by Lee Konitz. The ensemble writing is very playable with no range concerns in the brass. If you have a great alto saxophone player (the solo is mostly chord symbols), this is an easy tune to put together with your band and will be a spectacular addition to any concert program. 5-5-5-3.

A magnificent alto saxophone feature. Lennie also solos on his chart on the CD Live from the Tropicana. This is a superb arrangement, using all of the textures and power and sensitivity of the Kenton Orchestra. 5-4-4-3 (opt. 10 brass).

As recorded by the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Sketches on Standards, this is a superb alto saxophone ballad feature, as arranged by Russo for Lee Konitz. Russo employs a dark, brooding, beautiful setting for Konitz's soaring saxophone. Included is a transcription of Lee's amazing solo. 5-5-5-3.

This is a fast-paced, swinging chart, with lots of solo space for trumpet and baritone saxophone. There is also plenty of high-powered ensemble playing throughout. This edited version is created from the original parts, but Maynard's solo and lead parts are written into the standard trumpet section. Extra parts are also included for traditional instrumentation. This chart is one of the most recorded pieces in Maynard Ferguson's book and usually served as his opener with the Dream Band..

Many have tried, but few have been able to match the incredible swing that happens when you combine Billy Byers' arranging with the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Hey, Jealous Lover is a medium-swing chart that will excite your band and audiences alike! Filled with typical Basie-esque piano solo fills (written out), there is also room for trumpet and tenor saxophone improvisation. The ensemble writing is powerful and swinging; nothing complex or rhythmically awkward, just a great melody with hard swingin' horn lines and tasty solo spots. 5-4-4-4.

Really hot! An exciting uptempo Latin groove that starts out featuring a combo of alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet and trombone before adding the whole band into the mix. Plenty of solo space for the soloists of your choice. A perfect concert or contest choice for better bands and your audiences will love it. Don't miss this great chart!

As recorded on Libertango ! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla by the HR Big Band (Germany), this arrangement will surely lift your audiences out of their seats. It features a main soloist of your choice (originally recorded with bandoneon solo) and another solo for tenor saxophone. Various parts are included for different soloists to use. This marvelous arrangement opens with warm sounds in clarinets, muted trombones and flugelhorns behind the beautiful melody stated by the primary soloist. The setting is a medium tango, with a short, exciting swing section near the end of the chart. Once the piece moves into a strong, rock-fusion feel, there is no turning back. You and your band will love this chart. This requires clarinet doubles on the top 3 saxophone parts and bass clarinet on the baritone part. There is also a mallet part (marimba, vibes and xylophone). 5-4-4-5.

Every band from Tommy Dorsey to the Tonight Show Band to Ted Heath seemed to have a version of this great Sy Oliver tune. Bob Curnow compiled some of those versions into one great, new arrangement. It features, of course, the trumpet section (Bob wrote it for an optional 5-player section) and two improvised trumpet solos. The swing band feel is very much a part of this chart which culminates in an ending that will knock your socks off. Your audiences will LOVE this one. 5-5-4-4.

There may not be a more beautiful ballad anywhere in jazz ensemble literature. This is an alto saxophone feature throughout and was recorded on the Full Nelson album and also included in the Verve Jazz Masters collection CD. This is a stunning piece, which has a decidedly orchestral/classical sound to it. The possibility of using the original clarinet, flute oboe, bass clarinet and celeste parts makes this a most interesting and special piece. Regular saxophone parts are also included if doubles are not available. 5-4-4-4.
