Get out those plungers and let the fun begin! This hot chart has a great uptempo swing feel and the novel plunger effects in the brass give it a unique sound! Includes an open solo section for the soloist of your choice and written solo suggestions are also furnished. Range are reasonable and Larry's great scoring gives it a big solid sound even with bands of limited instrumentation. The concluding shout chorus starts soft, then brings down the house. Can't be beat!

Bob Curnow has a way of picking out the Metheny tunes that work so well in a big band setting. This chart is based on a bright, happy tune of Pat's. The medium tempo and contemporary feel make this a very delightful chart. There is solo space for alto sax (or guitar, or whomever you wish) 5-4-4-4.

Talk about a Flag-Waver !!! The Maynard Ferguson Band recorded this on their Footpath Cafe CD. The chart asks every player in the band to wail through a very hip and challenging be-bop line in unison. There are ensemble breaks here and there for very dramatic effects, and plenty of blowing space on the rhythm changes. You'll love doing this chart because you can really show off your band. 5-4-4-3.

This may be the all-time greatest jazz arrangement of a standard tune. Recorded on the Contemporary Concepts LP, this great standard is turned into a marvelous vehicle for solo statements from alto, tenor, 2 different trumpets and baritone saxophone. No big band jazz library can be complete without this superb arrangement. (This music is available from Mosaic Records in their Russo/Holman CD set.) 5-5-5-4.

Much like Neil Hefti's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour (originally Basie Land). Set as a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been simplified a bit. 5-4-4-4.

The Count Basie Orchestra performed the music of Billy Byers for many, many years. His arrangement of Come Fly With Me is recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra. Set in an up-tempo swing feel, Byers hits it hard from bar 1 and doesn't let up until the end of the chart. The interplay between saxophones and brass is clever and energetic, while the full ensemble writing is classic Basie sound at its finest. There is solo space for tenor saxophone, with fantastic ensemble backgrounds throughout much of it. No jazz library is complete without this classic Count Basie chart! 5-4-4-4.
