This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD Swingin' the Blues. Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble shout choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. You will have a blast with this one. 5-4-4-4.

Rich DeRosa has created a marvelous Latin composition in a baião feel that is recorded by the North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band. It comes out of the gate roaring. The very hip melody is stated by flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, trumpet and piano. There is plenty of room for improvisation with soloists of your choice, including space for your drummer and any other percussion you might choose to add. The ending of the piece is wild and always brings audiences to their feet! 5-4-4-4 (opt. vibes).

As the title implies, this chart does not rest for a moment. It moves from one tempo to another, doubling up and then doubling in tempo again. Needless to say, Stop/Go is an exciting excursion into the very hip mind of Bill Holman. The chart requires soprano saxophone on the lead part. Holman's humor comes to the fore in this fascinating arrangement. 5-4-4-3.

This arrangement of I Hope In Time a Change Will Come came about through a desire to hear/play more than one chorus of this stunningly beautiful melody by Oliver Nelson. The basis for this new arrangement was Nelson's original chart, but this one is two choruses, not one. Part of the second chorus can be improvised. The soloist throughout is soprano saxophone (could be played on tenor saxophone or trumpet if you so desire). This is a slow, gorgeous ballad that will thrill your audiences. 5-4-4-3.

This is a wonderful chart, an old tune in a new dress, as only Bill Holman can do it. It's the exact chart as recorded by the terrific Charlie Barnet Big Band. The tempo is bright, a swinging excursion into the clever writing of Holman. Solo space for piano, alto, tenor, trumpet, and drums. There is a great sax section soli and the usual, wonderful, roaring ensemble shout choruses. A big finish ends an amazing chart. 5-5-4-4 (4 tpts. work just as well).

A moderate tempo shuffle-feel makes this one swing like crazy! 5-4-4-4.
