As recorded on Tonight Show Band, Vol. 2 (Amherst), this chart won a Grammy for best big band arrangement. Holman took this great standard, put it in 3-4, and wrote scintillating counter lines that weave their way through the whole arrangement. Solo space for trumpet, and roaring ensemble passages make this chart something that should be in every big band library in the world. 5-5-4-3.

Here is another chart written for Stan Kenton (in the mid-1950's), that was never recorded by the band. It is a sensational piece, a real flag-waver which features alto saxophone from top to bottom. Great ensemble figures propel the soloist ever onward. This up-tempo swing chart is refreshing, with band vs soloist, great background figures, a very hip key change and excitement throughout. A wonderful feature for your hot alto saxophonist. Typical, great Holman. 5-5-5-3.

A totally hip funk tune with a swing sixteenth note feel that really lays right in the groove and every section gets a chance to shine. Your drummer will love the alternating measures of drum fills and ensemble kicks that build with intensity into the trumpet soli feature that in turn explodes into an open solo section for any soloists. Includes a guitar help sheet that includes tablature for licks and chord shape. A great closer that will make good bands sound even better! Really cooks!

This great chart is recorded (1999) on the Azica CD Swingin' the Blues. Holman grabs this simple Ellington tune and runs with it. The arrangement is yet another amazing example of Bill Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There is solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing. The ensemble shout choruses alone are enough reason to put this chart in every jazz band library in the land. You will have a blast with this one. 5-4-4-4.
