This beautiful and pensive ballad is a superb feature for your lead alto player. Rob has penned a melody that is truly haunting; along with attractive and ever-shifting chord changes and vibrant ensembles, creating a memorable piece that really stays with the listener long after it is over. Modest ranges and skillful scoring (the chart is playable with as few as 4 Saxes, 5 brass, and rhythm) make this chart a superlative choice for concert or contest, and a guaranteed mainstay in any jazz ensemble library.

Many have tried, but few have been able to match the incredible swing that happens when you combine Billy Byers' arranging with the Count Basie Orchestra. Originally recorded on the Basie album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Hey, Jealous Lover is a medium-swing chart that will excite your band and audiences alike! Filled with typical Basie-esque piano solo fills (written out), there is also room for trumpet and tenor saxophone improvisation. The ensemble writing is powerful and swinging; nothing complex or rhythmically awkward, just a great melody with hard swingin' horn lines and tasty solo spots. 5-4-4-4.

Powerhouse rock and a huge sound make this a real winner at the medium-easy level! Trombones and tenors get the melody first, with the altos and trumpets taking over at the bridge. The open solo section for any instrument is over a 2-chord vamp, but one simple scale is all the soloist(s) need to sound impressive. The shout chorus drives it home to a powerful ending. This one rocks hard, but plays easy!

There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, and drums. Filled with energy and excitement, the shout chorus comes roaring in to take the tune out with a bang. This is a great addition to any program! 5-4-4-3.

Your band will really swing with this tasty chart that lays right in the groove. Every section gets to play the melody while easy dorian solo changes over a blues style 12 bar format makes the open solo section approachable by any instrument in the band. The guitar helper part includes tablature and chord shape/performance suggestions. A written piano solo and optional vibes and vocal parts enhance the performance possibilities. Cool chart!

Rarely does a piece turn up like this one. Although written for Stan Kenton (the mid-1950s), the chart never was recorded by the band (Holman doesn't know why), and it was lost for years. It is a sensational piece, combining Afro-Cuban rhythm (Latin) and Swing, and featuring solo space for tenor sax, trumpet and drums. It utilizes counterpoint between the wind sections over a Latin vamp and explores the perfect balance between counterpoint and dynamic ensemble writing in the Swing sections. This is Holman at his very best! 5-5-5-4.

The Maynard Ferguson Band performed a lot of Abene's charts over the years. This chart is an excellent example of Abene's very musical approach to a great jazz standard. Very reasonable ranges throughout. Features tenor sax, trumpet and trombone solos. Destined to be a best-seller! Printed as originally scored (4-4-2-3), but including extra parts for a standard 5-4-4-4 instrumentation. This one burns!

This is a gorgeous ballad arranged by Willie Maiden for the great Maynard Ferguson Orchestra and is included in The Complete Roulette Recordings' (Mosaic). With a strong, Maynard-like player for this lead trumpet feature (written out), your band will have a truly magnificent, knock-out ballad to add to any concert program. 5-4-4-3.

Dreamin' Out Loud is a very accessible calypso chart that is reminiscent of Sonny Rollins's well known calypso tunes. An introductory chorale gives way to a happy, toe-tapping groove over which a tuneful melody is presented. The basic chord progression will accommodate multiple soloists. Great vehicle for exploring different rhythms and providing variety to a concert or festival program. Outstanding!
