Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote the lyrics of There is a land of pure delight and is known as the Father of English Hymnody. Watts was for the English hymn as Ambrose was for the medieval Latin hymn and what Martin Luther was for the German chorale. He wrote about 750 songs, and some of them survide the ravahes of time. (Joy To The World, When I survey the wondrous cross, I sing the Mighty Power of God) There is a Land of Pure Delight is usually in English-speaking areas sung on Luther Orlando Emerson's melody ('Ascription'). ‘Circus Delight’ is a five-part suite which is set, how could it be otherwise, in a big circus tent. The suite starts with a part called ‘Entrance’. The orchestra, positioned above the entrance of the ring asks for the attention of the audience and then the ring announcer enters. The show can begin! The elephants play a central role in the first act. These colossal grey animals are rather slow and perform their tricks in a moderate tempo. (‘Elephant Blues’) How different are ‘The Acrobats’. At high speed they run, jump and fly through the ring, until ....... It gets very exciting. Fortunately, all’s well that ends well and they take their leave of the audienceat a trot. Everyone knows, and yet it is mostly not spoken about, that when a clown has taken off his red nose and rubbed off his make-up, his face off-stage is not always a happy one. (‘Tears of the Clown’) The piece ends on a cheerful note with ‘The Parade’, in which all the artists make their entrance in the ring once again to gratefully acknowledge the audience’s overwhelming applause. ‘Circus Delight’ is een vijfdelige suite die zich afspeelt in, hoe kan het ook anders, een grote circustent. De suite begint met ‘Entrance’. Het orkest dat boven de ingang van de piste zit vraagt de aandacht van het publieken de spreekstalmeester komt binnen. De voorstelling kan beginnen. De olifanten staan centraal in de eerste act. De grote grijze kolossen zijn niet de snelste dieren en vertonen hun kunsten in een rustig tempo. (‘ElephantBlues’) Bij ‘The Acrobats’ is dat wel even anders. In rap tempo hollen, springen en vliegen ze door de piste totdat ... het heel spannend wordt. Maar het gaat gelukkig goed en in snel tempo nemen ze afscheid van het publiek.Iedereen weet het en toch, er wordt meestal niet over gesproken dat wanneer de clown na de voorstelling zijn rode neus en schmink afdoet, we zien dat het gezicht van de clown niet altijd lacht. (‘Tears of the Clown’) We sluiten vrolijk af met ‘The Parade’ waarin alle artiesten nog een keer in de piste voorbijkomen, om het overweldigende applaus dankbaar in ontvangst te nemen.

Five movements in techno-pop style. The work begins with Rock March with a few pithy chords over a driving percussion accompaniment. Feeling Free is a slow ballad. Rockarab is devoted to ‘the ship of the desert’, the camel. Little Chi Yan is a very charming, romantic song for a sweet little girl. In Disco Lights, we hear the stirring sounds of drums and bass guitar while the lights flash in the crowded discotheque. Inter-Pop ist die Fortsetzung von Pre-Pop von Kees Vlak. Prima Luce (First Light) was commisioned by the Holy Angels Elementary School located in Aurora (USA). The name of the town (which means dawn), the town’s great religious history and the fact that this town was one of the first in the USA to have streetlights were the inspiration for this Gregorian influenced atmospheric composition In The Four Noble Truths ('Die vier edlen Wahrheiten') hat sich Philip Sparke mit den vier Grundbegriffen der Lehre Buddhas befasst und sie in ein eindrucksvolles viersätziges Werk umgesetzt. Die Einteilung der Begriffe in zwei Paare - die Ursachen und die Reduzierung von Belastungen im Leben eines jeden Menschen beschreibend - spiegelt sich in zwei schnellen und zwei langsamen Sätze wider. The atmosphere in a busy town park in the spring provided me with the inspiration for this piece. The style of this piece can be described as light music with baroque influences. These baroque influences directly point to the richly ornamental statues, which can be found in the park. Een sfeervol, drukbezocht stadspark in het voorjaar inspireerde Jacob de Haan tot het schrijven van Queen’s Park Melody. De stijl van het werk is te omschrijven als lichte muziek met barokinvloeden - die verwijzen naar de weelderigversierde beelden die zich in het park bevinden. Deze vrolijke compositie is leuk om te spelen en om naar te luisteren.Inspiration bezieht Jacob de Haan also aus ganz unterschiedlichen Dingen. Auslandsreisen, Spaziergängen, Alltagserlebnissen. Aber auch Erfahrungen aus der Vergangenheit. Während seiner Konservatoriumsjahre spielte Jacob de Haan in einer Ska-Band. Speziell für diese Band schrieb ich eine Nummer. Diese Melodie ist mir im Gedächtnis haftengeblieben. Viele Jahre später, während eines Spaziergangs im Park, kam mir der Gedanke, dass die Nummer thematisch auch interessant für ein Brass-Band-Arrangement wäre.“ Queen's Park Melody gehört in die Kategorie ‚Leichte Musik mit barocken Einflüssen’: Letzteres ist ein Verweis auf die üppig verzierten Statuen im Park. DieKombination Barock und Pop? Das ist doch wunderbar zu spielen!“ - so der Komponist... Basée sur le célèbre parc Londres que le compositeur visita dans les années 80.

Mark Taylor wrote the trumpet feature Scream Machine for a vinyl album by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble in 1985. It was later published in a slightly simpler version called Brass Machine. This brass band arrangement by Philip Sparke has been arranged directly from the published jazz ensemble score and features soprano cornet and four solo cornets. Mark Taylor componeerde het stuk Scream Machine, waarin de trompet de hoofdrol speelt, voor een vinylalbum dat in 1985 werd uitgebracht door het Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Het werd later uitgegeven in een iets eenvoudiger versie, met als titel Brass Machine. Dit arrangement voor brassband is een rechtstreekse bewerking van de partituur voor het jazzensemble. Het is geschreven voor sopraancornet en vier solocornetten. Mark Taylor schrieb das Trompetenstück Scream Machine 1985 für das gleichnamige Vinylalbum des Army Blues Jazz Ensemble. Es erschien später in einer etwas leichteren Version unter dem Titel Brass Machine. From the composer: High Flyers are regarded as people with promise and potential.They are winners. This is music for winners.The title, as well as being a play-on-words, implies the nature of the work. It is a bright, optimistic, and upbeat piece attempting to depict an exhilarating ride on flying carpet. The opening rising chords immediately suggest the gentle elevation of the carpets' ascent towards unknown heights, leading to a hint of a first theme in the horns at Fig. B. The first four notes provide the thematic material for the whole work: C F G A.A perpetual sense of movement is achieved through accented quaver chords punctuating the melodicmaterial of the first main theme. Fig. E sees the music of the opening bars fully realised, with flourishes from the euphonium and baritones representing swirling clouds, shooting stars, or passing birds in flight.The same subject is developed into a lyrical second theme with a new lush harmonic treatment, evocative of gliding over an expanse of sparse countryside.This section ends with a note of serenity but is shattered by the urgent insistence of the percussion rhythms.The third section introduces a new idea with a slightly distorted fanfare in the cornets and trombones. This figure suggests for the first time that there may be trouble ahead. In fact, there is no need to fear and the journey can continue without aggravation. This fanfare returns near the end to signal a final note of triumph.A new rhythmic variant of the cell motif emerges as the third theme now transformed by the addition of a triplet figure. The music steadily gains momentum before moving inexorably towards the climactic return of the music and tonality of the opening bars of the piece.
