A ricercar is an instrumental work that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Jeremy Kempton's stirring Ricercar for Sonorous Instruments harkens back to the Venetian splendor of the Gabrielis who epitomized the Glory of Venice at its height. This 3 minute work is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare-like Allegro that gives way to a contrasting lyrical section which seems to almost melt away. The piece then returns to the opening Allegro and a hall-ringing conclusion. This work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Sicut cervus (As the deer longs for the springs of water, so my soul longs for you, oh God), is a 4-voice polyphonically rich motet based on Psalm 41 by the great Renaissance master Palestrina. Capriccio in B-flat, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work, first performed at age 19 when his brother Johann Jacob travelled to become an oboist in the army of Charles XII of Sweden. The 12-minute work for 4-part Trombone ensemble is appropriate for advanced performers. Dr. Marcellus has dedicated his arrangement to the memory of the late Steve Witser, his former student and colleague who was Principal Trombonist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The work is separated into six sections titled:
1. Arioso: Adagio - His friends try to persuade him not to undertake the journey
2. Andante - His friends tell him of the various misfortunes that may befall him abroad
3. Adagiosissimo - The general lament of his friends
4. Andante con moto - His friends come, since they see that it must be, and take leave of him
5. Posthorn Aria
6. Fugue in Imitation of the Posthorn.

These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.
The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.
It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.
