These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players. The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument. The composer wrote this work in 2004 for the Corpus trombone quartet, to whom it is dedicated. The piece consists of a slow and a fast section, both in rondo form. Its musical language makes use of a great many new elements of playing technique, which provide an excellent opportunity for displaying the fantastically virtuosic capabilities of both the new modes of sound production and the performers: they include Wah-muted notes with modulated tone colour, harmonic-glissandi, sequences of buzzing notes sung into the instrument, valve-modulated harmonic glissandi, rapid double- and tripletongued staccatos, and flutter-tongued, lip-trilled and buzzing lip-vibrating notes. The purpose: playful, good-humoured music-making, to exorcise evil from our lives.

Reflections was composed for the Japanese Trombone Quartet Zipang. The composer was so impressed by the quality of the quartet’s ensemble playing, blend and balance that he wanted to write a piece that would exploit these factors to the full. So the work is almost ‘conversational’, with the four players assuming equal roles and separately moving the musical argument forward. In dulci jubilo is an ancient traditional Christmas carol that first appeared around 1400 in Germany. Lisa Albrecht's beautiful arrangement for Trombone quartet is based on the 1837 setting by Robert Pearsall, the one of the favored by many choirs and their organists. The melody was so popular that many composers have tried their hand at arranging it including Buxtehude, Bach, Liszt and Dello Joio.
This arrangement of about 3 minutes can be performed by intermediate to advanced players. Trombone I is in tenor clef and the rest of the parts are in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players.

It's melody is intoxicatingly beautiful and leaves its listeners humming it long after the show is over. Lisa Albrecht of the Rochester Philharmonic has arranged a most lovely rendition of this great song for Trombone quartet.About five minutes in length, this work is appropriate for an advanced player on the lead part and intermediate performers in the rest.
