These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players. The FIRST SUITE has three movements and is intended for a trio of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument. The composer wrote this work in 2004 for the Corpus trombone quartet, to whom it is dedicated. The piece consists of a slow and a fast section, both in rondo form. Its musical language makes use of a great many new elements of playing technique, which provide an excellent opportunity for displaying the fantastically virtuosic capabilities of both the new modes of sound production and the performers: they include Wah-muted notes with modulated tone colour, harmonic-glissandi, sequences of buzzing notes sung into the instrument, valve-modulated harmonic glissandi, rapid double- and tripletongued staccatos, and flutter-tongued, lip-trilled and buzzing lip-vibrating notes. The purpose: playful, good-humoured music-making, to exorcise evil from our lives.

Equali were works written for equal, or similar, instruments; in the eighteenth century they were almost always used for funeral services and usually employed a quartet of trombones. The most famous of these were the three Beethoven wrote for the Linz Cathedral in Austria on All Soul's Day 1812. Two of these were adapted later for male voices and were sung at Beethoven's funeral.
These pieces are some of the most famous works for trombones, no doubt due to the fact that they were composed by Beethoven. They were commissioned by Franz Xaver Gloggl, Kappelmeister of the city of Linz, while Beethoven was visiting his brother. According to later accounts by Gloggl's son, although his father had a complete collection of trombones (soprano, alto, tenor, bass or quart) the three Equali were performed by a traditional quartet of alto, tenor and bass trombones.
This edition offers a compromise: the original score and parts are given exactly as written in the complete works, and a version designed for the less experienced players: the three movements are transposed down one step, edited with minor musical suggestions, and all four parts are written in bass clef.
Dr. Mathie has done the Trombone world a great service in bringing this great work in its two forms to publication.

The Eight Little Fugues, each originally paired with preludes are often performed in churches because of their technical ease and brevity. They have finally been attributed to Bach by most scholars after a number of years of doubt. They are less technically difficult than the full-blown fugues of Bach, but still equally full of beauty and commanding mastery.They are all less than 3 minutes in length with four in major keys and four in minor, appropriate for moderately advanced performers.These may be performed in a quartet or choir setting with multiple performers on a part.

Tomas Luis de Victoria was the most famous composer of the 16th century in Spain, and one of the most important composers of the Counter-Reformation, along with Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Victoria was not only a composer, but also an accomplished organist and singer. However, he preferred the life of a composer to that of a performer. He is sometimes known as the Spanish Palestrina because he may have been taught by Palestrina.

Bruckner's Pange Lingua motet, composed in 1868 is a hymn by the thirteenth-century theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas. The setting of the simple hymn is chorale-like, with the same music used for all three verses, and a lovely Amen being added to mark its finish. The text haunted Bruckner since his early years and he wrote a few settings of it during his lifetime. The music with all of its simplicity has some unexpected dissonances. Mr. Sauer's lovely arrangement of about 3 minutes in length is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
