For this arrangement of Wiegenlied, Johan Brahms? famous melody was used as the starting point and combined with an alpine horn call. The intention here is not to undermine the original but to pay homage to Brahms? ability to write a ?hit? melody. Bernard Scherr has arranged six lovely Portuguese Folksongs for Brass Quintet entitled: 1. Mourisca do Santo Joao de Braga (Moorish architechture of Saint John of Braga) as a march 2. A Pastorinha (The Shepherdess) - a lovely andantino 3. O Xi-Xi (Wee-wee) - a silly song 4. O ai, o linda! (Oh, the beauty!) - a lyrical romance 5. Coradinha (The blushing one) - a dance-like jaunt 6. Carro amaricano (American Car) - driving around in the auto These Portuguese folksongs contain many words and phrases that are associated with certain regions of Portugal. These folksongs come from northern Portugal and were collected during the first half of the 20th century. They represent, though, an earlier tradition stretching back into the 19th century and earlier. Some of these titles are terms of endearment (A Pastorinha, O Xi-Xi, and O ai, o linda), of something new and exciting (Carro amaricano), of dance (Coradinha), or of something that is not easily translated (Mourisca-referring either to architecture, a dance, or a local folk deity). These arrangements capture the charming melodies, woven throughout the group, and contain inventive harmonies and imitations. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone & Tuba. For advanced performers.

Scenes from Welsh life and landscape are a frequent source of inspiration for the music of Rhian Samuel, and, in Dovey Junction, the joyful atmosphere of families en route to the Welsh seaside via the little west-coast railway line is the cue for a crackling scherzo for brass quintet. A snappy rondo theme insists on dressing up in a different texture each time it returns. In between, pithy staccato phrases for trumpets are the setting for more cantabile figures from horn and trombone, and a brief and bluesy episode for muted solo trumpet suggests lazy days on the beach, or grown-up nostalgia for holidays long past. But the energy and sense of expectation remain unstoppable from the first bar to the last, and all five instruments sweep the music into a furious coda that ends the work in riotous high spirits. Dovey Junction was written for performance by Borealis Brass (Alaska) at the UNESCO World Forum on Music, Los Angeles, USA in October 20005, at the invitation of the Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica, (Rome).
