Bernard Scherr has arranged six lovely Portuguese Folksongs for Brass Quintet entitled: 1. Mourisca do Santo Joao de Braga (Moorish architechture of Saint John of Braga) as a march 2. A Pastorinha (The Shepherdess) - a lovely andantino 3. O Xi-Xi (Wee-wee) - a silly song 4. O ai, o linda! (Oh, the beauty!) - a lyrical romance 5. Coradinha (The blushing one) - a dance-like jaunt 6. Carro amaricano (American Car) - driving around in the auto These Portuguese folksongs contain many words and phrases that are associated with certain regions of Portugal. These folksongs come from northern Portugal and were collected during the first half of the 20th century. They represent, though, an earlier tradition stretching back into the 19th century and earlier. Some of these titles are terms of endearment (A Pastorinha, O Xi-Xi, and O ai, o linda), of something new and exciting (Carro amaricano), of dance (Coradinha), or of something that is not easily translated (Mourisca-referring either to architecture, a dance, or a local folk deity). These arrangements capture the charming melodies, woven throughout the group, and contain inventive harmonies and imitations. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, Trombone & Tuba. For advanced performers.

Here is a description of the music by the composer, Henry Wolking.Mannequin Challenge is a work for brass quintet inspired by the participatory video fad in which a group of people are shown posing stock-still for the camera while music is playing in the background. It became a social media participating video fad in November 2016 (with the hashtag #mannequinChallenge). Since then it has had become a world-wide phenomena, sort of like the Ice-Bucket Challenge, which I considered writing about, but then got cold feet. This work inverts the mannequin challenge sequence in that the music plays first, and then the musicians freeze in brief silence. Though the freezes are only in 3/8 in between the particularly beguiling musical interludes, they may be extended to any length. Long live social media and brass quintet mannequin challenges! This piece is scored for traditional brass quintet with Trumpets in B-flat and for advanced performers of about 2+ minutes in length.

Carlo Gesualdo, the ill-fated if brilliant composer of the 16th-17th centuries was all but lost to music history until his rediscovery in the 20th century. His writings, described as intensely expressive, were centuries ahead of their time, and were perhaps informed by the tragic events of his life. Of particular appeal are the many madrigals written between 1594 and 1613, and Freshner has chosen several examples in his arrangements for brass quintet. From the book of 1597, he adapts I. Luci serene e chiare, II. Ecco moriro dunque; Hai, gia mi discoloro, and III. Io tacero; Invav dunque, o crudele. The complex harmonies and spirituality are unlike anything else written 400 years ago. For advanced performers.
