This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd. Dit concertwerk in de reeks door Jacob de Haan verklankte staten is een suite in drie delen, gebaseerd op een bekende volksmelodie uit Arkansas.Tijdens de eerste maten komt in de euphoniums en bassen direct de volksmelodie naar voren, die uitmondt in een aantal lyrische maten. Deze vormen de inleiding tot een sneller tempo (Allegro risoluto) waarin de melodie in fragmenten wordt geëxposeerddoor euphoniums, baritons en bugel, canonisch beantwoord door de trombones. In het daaropvolgende Allegro molto klinkt een concertino-achtig spel in diverse instrumentgroepen, afgewisseld met een nieuwe, zangerige melodie. Het deel sluit af met devolksmelodie in de trombones, maar nu gedempt.Het tweede deel is een ballade waarin de volksmelodie in majeur klinkt. Na een inleiding van gedempte cornetten en trombones gevolgd door zacht koper is de melodie te horen in de euphoniums en baritons in een lyrische zetting. Even wordt detoonsoort weer mineur, wanneer instrumentgroepen elkaar imiteren. Met een bugelsolo komen we terug in majeur. Na een tussenspel klinkt een ornamentele variatie, vertolkt door een cornetsolo en euphoniumsolo,waarna een naspel met gedempte cornetten en trombones volgt. Het laatste deel komt tot klinken in een flitsend Allegro vivace, aanvankelijk vergezeld door chromatische lijnen in de begeleiding en een markant, door kwartentriolen afgewisseld ritme in het slagwerk. Dan klinkt de blues door in de cornetten enhoorns, begeleid door een jazzy ritme waarin de sfeer van de Bolero van Ravel even doorklinkt. Dit leidt via een parallelle triolenpassage terug naar het beginthema van dit deel, dat nu in diverse instrumenten te horen is. Dan verschijnt devolksmelodie weer in haar pure vorm in de euphoniums, waarop de bugel en later de solocornet reageert. Via enkele syncopische maten horen we het begin van de melodie nu in majeur gespeeld door respectievelijk cornetten en hoorns. Het slotgedeelteomvat een melodieuze lijn in lange noten die leidt naar een spetterend einde in kwartentriolen.Dieses Konzertwerk fügt sich in die Reihe der von Jacob de Haan vertonten amerikanischen Staaten. Es ist eine Suite in drei Sätzen auf der Grundlage von einem bekannten Volkslied aus Arkansas. In diesem abwechslungsreichen Werk erklingt das Volkslied ganz und in Fragmenten, in Moll und in Dur, als Ballade in lyrischer Besetzung, in Variationen, als Blues, von einem jazzigen Rhythmus begleitet, und zum Schluss wieder in seiner reinen Form. Dabei kommen alle Instrumentengruppen der Brass Band zum Zug!

Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a ‘moto perpetuo’-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand’s own ‘town song’ Holmestrandsangen, which comes again in full at the end of the piece, accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff werd geschreven in opdracht van het Holmestrand Ungdomskorps uit Vestfold in Noorwegen. Het werk bestaat uit vier delen: eerst een spectaculaire fanfare, gevolgd door een moto perpetuo-achtige toccata. Het derde deel, Hymn, is een prachtig stukje muziek waarin de muzikaliteit en klank van de band fraai tot hun recht kunnen komen. Le dernier mouvement, Scherzo Finale, commence par une courte phrase de l’hymne de la ville de Holmestrand, Holmestrandsangen, dont le retour en entier la fin de l’œuvre est accompagné d’un passage orné, basé sur le thème d’ouverture.

Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.Het tempo van deze mars is statig en de thema’s zijn concertant van karakter: Artemis is dus eerder geschikt als concertmars dan als loopmars. Technisch is dit werk niet erg lastig om spelen, al wordt af en toe wel wat vingervaardigheidvereist. De triomelodie is echter uitgesproken lyrisch en biedt diverse secties binnen het orkest de mogelijkheid om zich melodisch en expressief te etaleren. Een aangenaam klinkende en prima speelbare concertmars!Artemis ist die griechische Göttin der Jagd und der Wälder. Jan Van der Roost ließ sich zum wiederholten Male von der griechischen Mythologie inspirieren und komponierte diesen Marsch mit gemäßigtem Tempo und konzertanten Themen. Obwohl technisch nicht sehr schwer, erfordert er doch stellenweise etwas Fingerfertigkeit. Der Trio-Teil ist jedoch besonders lyrisch und bietet verschiedenen Registern die Möglichkeit, sich in Melodie und Ausdruck zu beweisen. Kurz gesagt ist Artemis ein ausgezeichneter und gut spielbarer Konzertmarsch, der viele Brass Bands anspricht.Artémis est la déesse grecque de la nature sauvage et de la chasse. Hormis quelques passages nécessitant une plus grande souplesse des doigts, elle ne contient que peu de difficultés techniques. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert. De wortels van de klezmerstijl liggen in wereldlijke melodieën, populaire dansen, het joodse ‘hazanut’ (cantorijmuziek) en de ‘nigunim’, de melodieën die worden gereciteerd door de ‘hasidim’ (orthodoxe joden). De term werd in de loopder tijden synoniem aan instrumentale muziek, waarin met name de viool en klarinet de hoofdrol spelen. Voor A Klezmer Karnival zijn drie traditionele melodieën gebruikt: Choson kale mazel tov, een bruiloftsdans,Freylekh, een joodse kringdans, en Sherele, een Duitse herdersdans.Philip Sparke verarbeitete in seinem neuen Werk drei unterschiedliche traditionelle Klezmermelodien: einen Hochzeitstanz mit Glückwünschen für Braut und Bräutigam, einen Rundtanz und einen so genannten Scherentanz. Daraus entstand A Klezmer Karnival, das die dem Klezmer eigene Mischung aus Fröhlichkeit und Melancholie ausgezeichnet wiedergibt. Ein ebenso abwechslungsreiches wie stimmungsvolles Konzertwerk, mit dem Ihre Brass Band überzeugen wird! Everyone will instantly recognise this great patriotic hymn that is often thought of as the second English national anthem. This brass band arrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances. Your audience will not be able to help themselves from joining in with this rousing song everytime you use it as the final item in any concert. Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.

This substantial work by Jan de Haan explores the many tonal qualities of the brass band. Following a quiet opening theme based on Phrygian tonality the band bursts into life with a massive climax. Following a jolly second theme characterised by large interval jumps peace and quiet is again restored. Both themes are developed with many poignant solo figures until we reach a resounding fortissimo climax with the solo cornet performing the first theme from the back of the auditorium. A spectacular concert work containing all the elements that bring out the best in brass band sound.Het werk begint met een in de frygische toonaard gecomponeerd thema A, dat na een climax overgaat in een snel gedeelte. Dit thema B valt op door de grote intervalsprongen. Hierna volgt een doorwerking waarin de twee hoofdthema's zowelafzonderlijk als gelijktijdig terugkeren. Het werk komt tot rust in een langzaam middengedeelte dat gebaseerd is op het B-thema. Het deel sluit af met een tutti gespeeld B-thema dat wreed wordt ge nterrumpeerd door fragmentenvan het A-thema, terwijl het B-thema (uit het langzame middendeel) in zijn geheel nog een keer terugkeert. Voordat het werk in een stralend fortissimo afsluit, ontstaat een bijzonder effect doordat de trompetsolist het A-thema speeltvan achter uit de zaal.Inspiration, ein Werk, das Jan de Haan für den Musikverband Solothurn komponierte, ist eine spannende Komposition mit zwei sehr unterschiedlichen Hauptthemen, die im Verlauf des Stückes teils einzeln, teils parallel behandelt werden. Der rassige erste Satz wird gefolgt von einem ruhigen Mittelteil, der Schlusssatz ist hingegen sehr rhythmisch und endet in einem glänzenden Fortissimo. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das Musiker und Publikum gleichermaßen inspirieren wird!

This attractive and unforgettable love song was a hit in the 60’s, and again in 2001, for Andy Williams. Lorenzo Bocci has created an inspired arrangement for brass band. Les auteurs-compositeurs Bob Crewe et Bob Gaudio ont formé un tandem couronné de succès. Dans les années 60 et 70, ils signent de nombreux tubes pour Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons dont l’immense standard de l’année 1967, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Par la suite, une pléiade d’artistes célèbres reprend cette chanson charmante au rythme enlevé. Ainsi, The Lettermen, Andy Williams, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gloria Gaynor, The Boystown Gang ou The Pet Shop Boys, entre autres (liste non exhaustive), ont inscrit ce classique de la musique pop leur répertoire. This fantasy tells the story of Oregon, one of Americas north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad, the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians, cowboys, golddiggers and hooded wagons willfile past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies, which could be the main themes of a movie, pass the review.The piece begins in a slow movement, introducing the first theme inminor. Then we hear in the following fast movement the trombones imitate the train, whistling the steam-flute. We hear the characteristic minor theme again, but now in different variants(also in major). The rythmic structure of western stile androck succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement, where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody, the fast movement appears shortly again, the trombones whistling thesteam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements, that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges, jazzy chords, interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. Afterthis, the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly, followed by the Allargando, which is agrand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end.Deze fantasie vertelt het verhaal van Oregon, een van de noordwestelijke staten van Amerika. Een treinreis over de Northern Pacific Railroad voert de luisteraar mee door het boeiende landschap van Oregon. Tijdens deze avontuurlijke reis isdromen over een ver verleden onvermijdelijk. The Spider's Web is a metaphor for danger, uncertainty and risk. Throughout the piece moments of danger contrast with moments of tranquility at certain points these two ideas merge and in others they battle against one another. In this piece which requires a lot of technical skills for the players, the composer moves unexpectedly from moments of peacefulness to situations of threat and danger. An impressive, versatile and truly spectacular piece!The Spider's Web (het spinnenweb) is een metafoor voor gevaar, onzekerheid en risico. Door het hele werk heen contrasteren momenten van dreiging met momenten van rust op bepaalde punten komen deze twee ideeën samen en op andere plekken gaan ze de strijd met elkaar aan. In dit werk, dat veel technische vaardigheid van de spelers vraagt, gaan momenten van vredige kalmte onverwacht over in situaties van dreiging en gevaar. Een indrukwekkend, veelzijdig en spectaculair werk!The Spider's Web (Das Spinnennetz) ist eine Metapher für Gefahr, Unsicherheit und Risiko. Während des Stücks stehen Momente der Gefahr im Kontrast zu Momenten der Ruhe an bestimmten Stellen verschmelzen diese beiden Ideen miteinander, an anderen kämpfen sie gegeneinander. In diesem Stück, das den Spielern viel technisches Können abverlangt, bewegt sich der Komponist unerwartet von Momenten der Ruhe zu Situationen der Bedrohung und Gefahr. Ein beeindruckendes, vielseitiges und wirklich spektakuläres Stück!The Spider's Web (La toile d’araignée) symbolise danger, incertitude et risque. Tout au long de la pièce, des moments de danger contrastent avec des passages tranquilles certains endroits, ces deux idées se fusionnent et, ailleurs, elles luttent l’une contre l’autre. Dans une œuvre qui exige de grandes compétences techniques, le compositeur alterne, de manière inattendue, entre moments de tranquillité et passages menaçants et inquiétants. Une pièce éloquente, flexible et franchement spectaculaire !
