This opener was written for the 10th anniversary of Brass Band Midden Brabant (BBMB), the composer’s own band. A soft and lyrical middle section follows on the powerful opening fanfare which, if the technical equipment is available, can be used as background music for a spoken text or presentation. The finale is distinctly rhythmical in character, and develops into a somewhat unusual ending. Here, the composer piles ten different notes on top of each other, representing the BBMB anniversary in a musical way. At a later date the composer made two new versions of Signature, namely for wind band and fanfare.

Signature was een van de eerste werken voor brassband van Jan Van der Roost. Het gaf hem meteen aanzien in de internationale brassbandscène en het wordt wereldwijd nog steeds veel gespeeld.

Mit Signature, einem seiner ersten Werke für Brass Band, verschaffte sich der Komponist auf Anhieb Anerkennung in dieser Szene.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.

Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geënt op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema’s op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. Het is heelgeschikt voor de opening van een festival, want het creëert een enthousiaste, verwachtingsvolle stemming. Na de ritmische fanfares van de opening wordt het eerste thema gepresenteerd in de cornetten, gevolgd door een terugkeer naar hetzelfderitmische materiaal. Er verschijnt een tweede thema in de hoornsectie, dat wordt doorontwikkeld en overgaat in een duistere en onheilspellende vorm van hetzelfde motief. Uiteindelijk komt er een maestoso gedeelte tot stand, vol aangehouden akkoordenin de kornetten en trombones, waarbij de rest van het orkest dalende lijnen produceert die door de helder klinkende instrumenten heen zijn geweven.

Dieses Musikstück, das voller Energie und von extremer Dynamik geprägt ist, wurde der North American Brass Band Association gewidmet. Der formale Aufbau des Werkes orientiert sich an einer Ouvertüre, auch wenn die Themen für sich selbst stehenund das Stück programmatisch ist. Es eignet sich gut als Eröffnungsstück für ein Festival, da es das Publikum begeistern wird. Auf den Fanfarenrhythmus der Einleitung folgt das erste Thema, das von den Kornetten vorgestellt wird und schließlich zumursprünglichen rhythmischen Material zurückkehrt. Das zweite Thema wird von den Hörnern gespielt und weiterentwickelt, wobei das gleiche Motiv in eine dunklere und unheimlichere Stimmung wechselt. Danach erklingt ein Maestoso-Teil mit Akkordblöckenin den Kornetten und Posaunen, während das restliche Orchester kaskadenartige Melodielinien spielt, die sich durch die helleren Instrumente schlängeln.

Dédiée la North American Brass Band Association, cette œuvre est pleine d’énergie et de dynamiques extrêmes. En dépit de sa forme d’ouverture, les thèmes ne sont pas liés et l’œuvre est programme. Convient comme pièce d’ouverture defestival et crée une ambiance d’enthousiasme. Suite aux fanfares rythmiques du début, le premier thème est présenté par les cornets piston, suivi par un retour au même matériel rythmique. Un deuxième thème apparaît dans le registre des cors et estdéveloppé, se changeant en une version plus sombre et sinistre du même motif. Finalement on arrive une section de Maestoso, qui contient de nombreuses double-cordes soutenues chez les cornets et trombones, tandis que le reste de l’ensemblerépond par des lignes descendantes qui se tissent travers les instruments plus aigus.

Trittico Festoso is a festive three-part composition that is dedicated to the conductor of a brass band. Each of the three movements reflects a different aspect of his character: in the opening fanfare, his personality is presented; then his work as manager, organiser and conductor is depicted in the dynamic Daily Life; while in The Artist, the sensitive, creative man himself is portrayed. An elegant tribute to the man with the baton!

Trittico Festoso is een feestelijk werk in drie delen dat is opgedragen aan de dirigent van een brassband. Elk deel weerspiegelt een aspect van zijn karakter: in de openingsfanfare wordt zijn persoonlijkheid gepresenteerd; dan wordt zijn werk als manager, organisator en dirigent beschreven in het dynamische Daily Life; waarna zijn gevoelige, creatieve kant wordt belicht in The Artist. Trittico Festoso est une composition festive en trois parties, dédiée au chef d’orchestre d’un brass band. Chacun des trois mouvements reflète un aspect différent de son caractère : dans la fanfare d’ouverture, sa personnalité est présentée ; puis son travail comme manager, organisateur et dirigeant est dépeint dans le dynamique Daily Life ; tandis que dans The Artist, l’homme sensible, créatif est représenté. The composition Kefas was written for the brass band 'Apollo' from Grou (The Netherlands), by order of the Unisono Foundation, the organisation for wind music in The Netherlands.
The assignment was given on account of earning the Champions Title during the Dutch Brass Band Championships in the year 2001 (4th division).

The theme of the composition links the tradition of the village Grou, not to celebrate Sint Nicolaas but Sint Pieter.By this typical Dutch festivity (in December) the holy Nicolaas gives presents to the children. It is a popular custom where young and old participate.
Grou is the only place where this is not done by Sint Nicolaas but by Sint Pieter.Apart from that, on the 22th of Februari, a lot of festivities that take place,resemble those of the Sinterklaas celebration.

In the composition two Sint Pieter songs are processed, set through bible scenes, wherein in among others the visit of Christ to the house of Peter's Mother-in-law and the calling of Peter are depicted.
The title refers to the pronouncement of Christ, where he named Peter the rock on which he shall build his church.
The Hebrew word for rock is Kephas.
Kefas was premiered in 2003.

After the introduction, in which the landscape of Groningen with its beautiful wide views is presented, follows five variations based on the 13th-century Gregorian theme Dies Irae that is attributed to Thomas van Celano. Each variation can be seen as a stage or a scene in the rich history of the village of Grijpskerk, making this work a very exciting and expressive piece of music for a contest or a concert.

Na de inleiding, waarin het Groninger landschap met zijn prachtige vergezichten wordt voorgesteld, volgen vijf variaties die zijn gebaseerd op het 13e-eeuwse gregoriaanse thema Dies Irae, dat wordt toegeschreven aan Thomas van Celano. Elke variatie is terug te voeren tot een markante gebeurtenis uit de rijke geschiedenis van de plaats Grijpskerk, waarmee dit werk een aantrekkelijk, expressief stuk muziek is waarmee je voor de dag kunt komen bij een wedstrijd of een concert.

Nach der Einleitung, in der die Gegend Groningens mit ihren schönen weiten Landschaften vorgestellt wird, folgen fünf Variationen über das gregorianische Thema Dies Irae aus dem 13. Jahrhundert, das Thomas von Celano zugeschrieben wird. Jede Variation kann als eine Station oder Szene aus der bedeutenden Geschichte dieses Ortes betrachtet werden. Dieses spannende und ausdrucksvolle Werk eignet sich gut für Wettbewerbe, aber auch als Konzertstück.

L’introduction, qui évoque le paysage de Groningen avec ses magnifiques vues étendues, est suivie de cinq variations basées sur le thème grégorien du XIIIe siècle, Dies Irae, qui est attribué Thomas de Celano. Chaque variation peut être considérée comme une étape ou une scène de la riche histoire du village, ce qui fait que cette œuvre formidable et expressive se prête parfaitement un concours ou un concert.

Match-Rhythm was the compulsory work for the B-division during the European Brass Band Championships of 2005 taking place in Groningen.

It is a rhythmical (Rhythm) oriented opening work in which the bands have the opportunity to present themselves during the indisputable competitive character (Match) of these championships.
To achieve the high standard required is intensive preparation alone not sufficient.
The bands increase their level op performance during the customary try-out concerts so that a kind of competitive rhythm (Match) is acquired.

Match-Rhythm was het verplichte werk voor de B-divisie op het Europees Brassband Kampioenschap (EBK) van 2005 in Groningen.

Het is een ritmisch (Rhythm) getint openingswerk waarmee de bands zich kunnen profileren op dit kampioenschapdat ontegenzeggelijk een sterk wedstrijdkarakter (Match) heeft.
Om hier goed te kunnen presteren is een goede voorbereiding alleen niet voldoende.
De bands spelen zich in vorm op de traditionele try-out concertenzodat ze een soort van wedstrijdritme (Match-Rhythm) krijgen.

The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool, instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, ‘Der Terk in Amerika’, a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).
