During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation, sound and balance.

This opener was written for the 10th anniversary of Brass Band Midden Brabant (BBMB), the composer’s own band. A soft and lyrical middle section follows on the powerful opening fanfare which, if the technical equipment is available, can be used as background music for a spoken text or presentation. The finale is distinctly rhythmical in character, and develops into a somewhat unusual ending. Here, the composer piles ten different notes on top of each other, representing the BBMB anniversary in a musical way. At a later date the composer made two new versions of Signature, namely for wind band and fanfare.

Composed by Paul Raphael, Explorers on the Moon, the sequel to his 2017 work Destination Moon, was composed in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Moon Landings. It is inspired by the Belgian author Hergé and his most famous creation, Tintin. The music uses Hergé’s story from 1950 almost twenty years prior to the first ever moon landing - following Tintin and his fellow adventurers as they become the first humans on the Moon. This fantastic piece is split into three parts, titled ‘Space’, ‘Nightmare Land’ and ‘The Journey Home’ and is one of the most spectacular contest pieces in recent years. Explorers on the Moon, komponiert von Paul Raphael, entstand 2019 anlässlich des 50.

Although Cesar Franck won many prizes during his student days his music was generally unrecognised by his contemporaries. His pieces were written in the romantic style whilst retaining a classical structure and his later compositions were referred to as 'cathedrals of sound'. Panis Angelicus is poetic and almost serene and this arrangement by Philip Sparke retains all of the beauty of the original.

A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.

King Arthur is a five-movement suite based on the famous Arthur ledged. It forms part of the ‘Easy Band 4’ series in which all pieces have ten-part instrumentation (+ percussion) so can be performed by bands who do not have a full compliment of players. Bring a little Arthurian magic to your concert with this easy and exciting suite. This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept. The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

Liberty Fanfare follows the successful pattern that John Williams has made his own in a series of ceremonial fanfares. The grandeur and energy that are heard in this exciting short work form a juxtaposition and eventual combination of lively fanfare figures together with a broader theme. It’s concise form and simple directness makes a bold opening statement for any concert. Die Freiheitsstatue im New Yorker Hafen wurde am 28. Oktober 1886 eingeweiht.

Meet the Band! was written as an ‘opening work’, but it is also perfectly suitable for performing halfway through a concert programme. During the introduction, the cornet players are lined up on both sides of the stage, while the trombone players take centre stage. Gradually all the sections of the band are introduced to the audience. Meet the Band? You certainly have! Meet the Band! - Lernen Sie die Band kennen! - dieser Titel darf hier wörtlich genommen werden!

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. Asteroids and Shooting Stars beschrijft objecten in de ruimte.

This work was composed for a series of concerts that were characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. A typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are contained in this three-minute work.
