Edward MacDowell can be regarded as the first great American composer, although he disliked the idea of being classified as any sort of musical nationalist. He composed a large number of orchestral works but it is the charming and unpretentious suite of musical miniatures, Woodland Sketches, that has survived as his best-known work, with To a Wild Rose being the most popular. Philip Sparke has expertly arranged this simple work for brass band. Mais l’œuvre la plus connue de son répertoire est une charmante suite de miniatures musicales pour piano, Woodland Sketches, une composition modeste et stylistiquement simple dont est extraite la plus célèbre de ces miniatures To a Wild Rose (“ une rose sauvageâ€). L’étonnante sincérité de la mélodie fit dire un grand critique musical que cette mélodie valait toutes les œuvres pour piano réunies de MacDowell.

Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition. Oorspronkelijk componeerde Edward Elgar (1857-1934) dit werk in 1887 als een Pie Jesu, toen hij organist was in de St. George’s Church in Worcester. Hij schreef het ter nagedachtenis aan de advocaat William Allen, voor wiehij had gewerkt toen hij vijftien jaar oud was. Het Pie Jesu vormde het eerste deel van opus 2 (de andere twee delen waren het Ave Maria en het Ave Maris Stella). Salute to the Victor is in traditional march form and contains, as a tribute to Victor Grieve who was a devotee of English music (in particular that of Sir Edward Elgar), a short quote from Elgar’s Sea Pictures in the trio. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.

The hymn tune Rhosymedre is the work of the nineteenth-century Anglican priest John David Edwards, who named it after the village of Rhosymedre in North Wales, where he served as the vicar for 43 years until his death in 1885. Vaughan Williams's organ prelude has been arranged for many different instrumental groups, including orchestra, string quartet and brass quintet, but not until now for brass band. This arrangement was prepared in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer's death and was first performed by the Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band at the 2008 RNCM Festival of Brass, conducted by Christopher Houlding.
