Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is Cock O' the North a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. Auntie Mary, had a canary, Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers. II. The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go. On the other hand, there are also people who are the exact opposite: they want to do too many things at once and are often somewhat absent-minded, which occasionally results in frantic situations. The outcome of one such situation is ‘They are coming’. John Emerson Blackstone had been working on a new composition for some time when he received a telephone call from his editor, who told him that the deadline was approaching rapidly, even worse, that it would expire at the end of that same day and that he would drop by in person to fetch thecomposition! Blackstone set to work in a frenzy and completed the last details. When his editor arrived, the piece was finished ..... and got its definitive title: ‘They are coming’. Er zijn mensen die goed kunnen plannen. Ze leven zeer gestructureerd en weten precies wat ze moeten doen. Er zijn er ook die dat niet kunnen. Ze doen vaak vijf dingen tegelijkertijd, zijn niet zelden enigszins verstrooid met als gevolgdat er af en toe gespannen situaties ontstaan. Het resultaat van zo’n situatie is ‘They are coming’. John Emerson Blackstone was al een poosje bezig met een nieuwe compositie toen de hij zijn uitgever aan de telefoon kreeg.De deadline kwam met rasse schreden in zicht, sterker nog, het einde van die bewuste dag was de deadline en zou de uitgever het materiaal bij de componist ophalen. Blackstone is als een razende Roeland aan het werk gegaanen heeft de laatste puntjes op de i gezet. Toen de uitgever arriveerde was het stuk klaar... en kreeg haar definitieve titel: ‘They are coming’.

This new original composition by the Japanese composer Itaru Sakai for ten-part brass ensemble is characterised by two main ideas: a fanfare section, deriving from a literal quotation from the opening of Mahlerâ??s fifth symphony, and a contrasting,wandering theme thatâ??s rather melancholy.A BOUNDARY ISLAND is geschreven voor het Brass Ensemble Rose en het RivST Brass Quintet. De première vond op 13 april 2010 plaats in de Rose Hall in het Japanse Toyonaka Osaka, tijdens een concert waarin beide blazersensemblesoptraden. De componistwilde met dit werk het karakter van de muziek als universele taal uitdrukken - een taal waarin mensen uit alle delen van de wereld met elkaar kunnen communiceren.Aan het begin van de compositie worden tweethemaâ??s ge ntroduceerd: het eerste, in fanfareachtige stijl, is ge nspireerd op een citaat uit de opening van Mahlers vijfde symfonie. David Well composed ‘X-mas for Three’ for three young pupils of his, who wished to give a Christmas concert. He arranged six well-known Christmas songs for them, and their first performance was a great success. This was reason for the composer to adapt the piece for ‘orchestra’ by adding percussion. The assignment to write a test piece for the National Brass Band Championships ended up also being a ‘test piece’ for myself as a composer. Although being quite familiar with the Brass Band phenomenon, as a composer I still have the feeling ofbeing an outsider. Delta Energy turned out to be a non-program composition. The Brass Band as orchestra form is depicted musically in this piece. All the specific characteristics are portrayed in varying settings. Solo passages for Euphonium,Flugelhorn and Cornet alternating with extensive tutti-passages and of course technical highlights form the ingredients for this work written in rhapsodic form. The title “Delta Energy” is derived from a project of the N.V. NederlandseGasunie in Groningen which also contributed in making this composition possible.Delta Energy is een spectaculair en verfrissend concertwerk van Jan Bosveld (Nijmegen, Holland). Het beleefde haar première als testpiece (3e divisie) ter gelegenheid van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen (2002) te Groningen. Decomponist heeft getracht een gevarieerd speelwerk te maken waarbij de mogelijkheden van het fenomeen brassband optimaal worden benut. Delta Energy is abstract van opzet en heeft geen programmatische inhoud. Het werk bestaat uit 5 aaneengeslotendelen welke aan elkaar worden verbonden door cadensen van solisten of secties. Een krachtig, ritmisch getint openingsmotief brengt ons al snel bij het hoofdthema gespeeld door de cornetsectie. Dit grillige en ritmische gedeelte wordtafgesloten door een cadens van de euphonium die ons in het tweede gedeelte brengt dat wederom zeer ritmisch van karakter is met een knipoog naar de Tarantella. De flugelcadens zorgt ervoor dat er rust in het werk komt. Dit derde deel doet onsdenken aan een deel uit de Schilderijententoonstelling van Modest Moessorgsky, niet in de laatste plaats door de lyrische euhoniumsolo. Een cadens van de cornetsectie verplaatst ons naar het 4e deel en daarmee naar de virtuositeit van debrassband. De energie en de actie zetten de band en publiek op scherp in een zinderend feest. De korte trombonecadens zet de zaak nog eenmaal stil om in het 5e deel Delta Energy op spectaculaire wijze te beëindigen. Een weergaloze compositie!Gobelin Music Publications.

One of the first multinationals in The Netherlands was the ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC). The aim of the VOC was to send ships to Asia in order to buy pepper and spices, and to take over the Portuguese monopoly in this field. The Company was successful. An era of great prosperity resulted, in which the art of painting (Rembrandt van Rijn) as well as science (Constantijn Huygens) flourished alongside a thriving economy. 1. The Sails are set : There is a lot of hustle and bustle on the quay. The crew are preparing fordeparture. Goodbyes are said and once the sails have been hoisted the ship sets out to sea.2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: After a voyage of many months the place of destination is reached. A visit to the Radja, the king of the area around Yokyakarta, follows. The dishes and beverages and the native culture in general are very pleasant after having been on a diet of ship’s biscuit and water for such a long time.3. The Holds have been loaded: The holds have been loaded to the brim, and the voyage home can be begin!4. Death sails along: Life at sea is rough. not seldom did a sailor die of a tropical disease or scurvy. After a memorial service, the Captain would speak the words ‘One, two, three, in God’s name ...’ and the body, wrapped in canvas, would be committed to the sea.5. A joyful homecoming: After many months of hardship coming home is perhaps the best part of the entire voyage. The quay is filled with people eager to give the crew a warm welcome. Tijdens de Nationale Herdenking op de Dam klinkt sinds 2000 de compositie ‘Tot de doden’ van Rob Goorhuis. De componist schreef deze muziek in opdracht van het Ministerie van Defensie en liet zich inspireren door het gelijknamigegedicht van Ed Hoornik. Het muziekstuk is precies afgestemd op de duur van de plechtigheid, de verschillende kransleggingen en de grote bezetting van de militaire kapel. Dit maakt het stuk minder geschikt voor lokale herdenkingen.Daarom heeft het Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei Rob Goorhuis verzocht muziek te componeren die beter aansluit bij de opzet van lokale herdenkingsbijeenkomsten. Dit heeft twee korte, gedragen composities opgeleverd, die zijn uitgegevenop ‘marsformaat’. Herkenbare thema’s uit ‘Tot de doden’ keren erin terug. De titel van het eerste deel is ontleend aan het gedicht ‘In Vredesnaam’ van Jana Beranová.

The saying inspired Peter Martin to compose a highly attractive piece in four parts, consisting of contemporary dances that can also be performed separately. Let's dance! De titel is een populair gezegde in Engeland. Het betekent vrij vertaald - waar het geld zit. 'Where there's muck there is power' is zo'n gevleugelde uitspraak uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het gezegde inspireerde Peter Martin tothet schrijven van een bijzonder aardig 5-delig werk met moderne dansen welke ook gescheiden van elkaar gespeeld kunnen worden. Let's dance! 1. Easy does it - Steady Rock Een aanstekelijk stukje in rock-stijl. De rockmuziek bestaatvanaf begin 60-er jaren en sindsdien is de stijl populair gebleven maar er is geen genre waar zoveel bands de grond in- en uitgestampt worden. Maar het blijft leuk. 2. Best Foot Forward - mars positief De grootste doemdenkers wordenvrolijk bij het aanhoren van een vrolijke mars. De oorsprong van de mars is niet te achterhalen maar de stijl blijft populair en actueel. Best Foot Forward is een op Amerikaanse leest geschoeide mars. 3. Swing Bin - De swingstijldie eind 20-er jaren in de VS losbarstte was een uitvloeisel van de crisisjaren. Aangevoerd door Benny Goodman en de Dorsey Brothers (Tommy en Jimmy) werd deze vorm een rage die grote invloed bleef houden op de ontwikkeling vande jazzmuziek. Stilzitten is er niet bij want de muziek nodigt uit tot het losmaken van al die luie spieren en waar kan dat het beste? In de concertzaal maar het liefst op de dansvloer. 4. The Supreme Skedaddle - alla US March Eenuitsmijter vormt de Supreme Skedaddle, een mars in US-stijl. Het woord skedaddle is een interessant item voor etymologen maar de componist kent het woord uit zijn Noord-Engelse geboortegrond. Het betekent daar 'verspilling vaniets'. Maar de feestelijke mars is beslist geen verspilling van papier of energie.

The Viking age lasted from the late eighth, to the middle of the eleventh century. During this period, Scandinavian warriors and merchants explored, plundered and left their mark on numerous territories. Dit werk is gebaseerd op een reeks van vier noten en het bestaat uit vier delen die elkaar naadloos opvolgen: Northern Men, Explorer, Raids en Heritage. Das Werk basiert auf einer Folge von vier Noten, die in unterschiedlichen Formen verwendet werden, und besteht aus vier Sätzen: Northern Men, Explorer, Raids und Heritage. Es ist ein beeindruckendes und fantastisches Stück mit zahlreichen interessanten und verspielten Passagen für alle Instrumentengruppen. Pendant cette période, les Vikings, guerriers et marchands scandinaves, ont exploré, pillé et marqué de leur empreinte de nombreux territoires. Cette œuvre est basée sur une série de quatre notes que l’on retrouve sous différentes formes. Elle se divise en quatre parties enchaînées: Northern Men, Explorer, Raids et Heritage. Une œuvre impressionnante et spectaculaire, elle comprend de nombreux fragments intéressants et enjoués pour tous les registres. Elle serait idéale comme pièce de concours ou pour un concert thématique.

Rob Goorhuis schreef de compositie Amsterdam voor Amsterdam Brass in 2002. Het werk beleefde haar premi?re in 2003 in een uitvoering van de opdrachtgever. De componist, zelf Amsterdammer van geboorte, heeft in dit werk zijn herinneringen aan de toen ook al bruisende stad muzikaal verwerkt in een combinatie met het heden. De geluiden van de stad zoals Goorhuis die in de 50-er jaren hoorde zijn al dan niet abstract weergegeven in Amsterdam. Amsterdam bestaat uit drie in elkaar overgaande delen. Het eerste deel (Allegro Moderato) beschrijft de grote drukte in de Nederlandse hoofdstad die altijd leeft, beweegt, zindert en schijnbaar nooit 'slaapt'. Devoortdurende zestiende beweging in de diverse instrumenten benadrukken die immer aanwezige drukte in de stad die in de volksmond bekend staat als 'Mokum'. Zelfs de klanken van een Amsterdams draaiorgel zijn goed hoorbaar in dit eerste gedeelte. De karavaan vuilnisauto's die elke ochtend om 5 uur door de straat van de nog jonge Rob Goorhuis reed is een hoorbare herinnering aan vervlogen tijden. Het tweede deel brengt ons in het Vondelpark aan de rand van het centrum. Het thema wordt voorgesteld door de bugel en voert via variaties op dit thema in diverse andere instrumenten naar een drukker gedeelte van het stadspark om vervolgens weer kort terug te keren naar de oase van rust.Het tempo en de begeleidende beweging zijn bepalend voor het bijzondere karakter van dit middendeel. Het derde deel zet ons weer met beide benen in het bruisende hart van de stad. De euphonium introduceert het grillige thema, met karakteristieke toonladderfiguren en kwartsprongen, dat in de verschillende stemmen canonisch wordt verwerkt. Halverwege duikt onopvallend het thema van het middendeel weer op dat steeds opvallender naar voren komt resulterend in een verrassend slot. Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship, Bergen, February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus. The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. The composer: In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius, that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well, not a good translation I¬?m afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section, I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling, a norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest. Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren, maar bovenal te respecteren. Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft. Gobelin Music Publications.

Match-Rhythm was the compulsory work for the B-division during the European Brass Band Championships of 2005 taking place in Groningen. It is a rhythmical (Rhythm) oriented opening work in which the bands have the opportunity to present themselves during the indisputable competitive character (Match) of these championships. To achieve the high standard required is intensive preparation alone not sufficient. The bands increase their level op performance during the customary try-out concerts so that a kind of competitive rhythm (Match) is acquired.Match-Rhythm was het verplichte werk voor de B-divisie op het Europees Brassband Kampioenschap (EBK) van 2005 in Groningen. Het is een ritmisch (Rhythm) getint openingswerk waarmee de bands zich kunnen profileren op dit kampioenschapdat ontegenzeggelijk een sterk wedstrijdkarakter (Match) heeft. Om hier goed te kunnen presteren is een goede voorbereiding alleen niet voldoende. De bands spelen zich in vorm op de traditionele try-out concertenzodat ze een soort van wedstrijdritme (Match-Rhythm) krijgen.
