British composer Philip Sparke was asked to write this arrangement of Hymn to Frei for the Norwegian Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk . Sparke had already used part of this hymn by a composer well-known in the home region of the band in The Saga of Haakon the Good. In A Norwegian Hymn, three verses of the tune can be heard: the first is performed by various soloists, followed by a quieter second verse, before the third verse brings the piece to a triumphal close. A beautiful piece, which is also excellent to use to work on musicality with bands in lower divisions.

Philip Sparke arrangeerde Hymne to Frei voor de Noorse Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk. In A Norwegian Hymn zijn ook drie verzen uit zijn eerdere werk The Saga of Haakon the Good te horen. De eerste wordt uitgevoerd door diverse solisten, gevolgd door een rustiger tweede couplet. Het derde deel brengt het werk naar een triomfantelijk einde. Een mooi werk waarmee u uitstekend kunt werken aan de muzikaliteit van orkesten in de lagere divisies.

Der britische Komponist Philip Sparke schrieb im Auftrag der Frei Hornmusikk aus Norwegen diese Bearbeitung der Hymn to Frei aus der Feder eines bekannten Komponisten aus der Heimatregion dieser Brass Band. Sparke hatte Teile dieses Kirchenlieds bereits zuvor in The Saga of Haakon the Good verwendet. Eine schönes Stück, dass sich außerdem sehr gut für Brass Bands niedrigerer Klassen eignet, die an ihrer Musikalität arbeiten wollen.

Sparke avait déj intégré une partie de ce cantique, écrit par un compositeur connu dans la région natale de cette fanfare, dans « The Saga of Haakon the Good ». On peut entendre trois couplets de la mélodie dans A Norwegian Hymn : le premier joué par plusieurs solistes, suivi par le deuxième qui est plus tranquille, avant que le troisième ne conclue la pièce d’une façon triomphante. Un morceau magnifique qui est aussi idéal pour travailler sur la musicalité des ensembles des divisions inférieures.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Die Nebenphrase in den Hörnern und Baritonen führen zu einer Tutti-Version des Hauptthemas, die vomtraditionellen Bass“-Solo abgelöst wird. Ein Tonartwechsel kündigt den Trio-Teil an, der eine cantabile gespielte Melodie auf dem Euphonium enthält; diese wiederum wird nach einer kurzen Überleitung und einem weiteren Tonartwechsel von der gesamten Band aufgegriffen.Der letzte Wechsel führt zurück zur ursprünglichen Tonart, in welcher dann eine Staccato-Version des Hauptthemas eine Rekapitulation hervorbringt sowie eine Coda, die den Marsch zu seinem Ende führt.

Marcho Brioso est une œuvre de commande pour le Brioso Brass, un Brass Band de style britannique basé Hokkaido, au Japon. La création mondiale de cette pièce eut lieu en janvier 2012.L’orchestre souhaitant une marche enjouée qui pourrait lui servir d’indicatif musical, Marcho Brioso s’inscrit dans la lignée des marches du compositeur : Jubiloso, Slipstream et The Bandwagon. Un style « broadwayien », des motifs fortement syncopés et quelques surprenantes et capricieuses mesures viennent troubler le rythme régulièrement cadencé de ces marches.Après une courte introduction, le cornet solo joue le thème principal, accompagné d’un contre-chant l’euphonium. Un second motif de huit mesures exécuté par les cors et les barytons mène une version tutti du thème principal. Puis une brève section intermédiaire est déléguée aux basses. Le changement de tonalité qui s’ensuit annonce le trio qui contient une mélodie cantabile confiée l’euphonium ; ce trio est ensuite repris par l’orchestre entier après un bref passage de transition et un autre changement de tonalité.Nous revenons ensuite la tonalité de départ pour un rappel du thème principal en une paisible version staccato et une courte coda, pour conclure cette marche brillante et sémillante.

Sanctuary was commissioned by Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass from New Zealand and was performed as an own choice piece at the 2018 New Zealand National Brass Band Championships. It opens with an expressive cornet solo, hymn-like in mood. A slightly faster central section builds to a change of key and an expansive return of the opening melody, this time scored for full band. After an emotional climax the mood subsides, leading to a quiet close.

Sanctuary werd geschreven in opdracht van Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass uit Nieuw-Zeeland en werd uitgevoerd als zelfgekozen werk tijdens de New Zealand National Brass Band Championships van 2018. Het werk opent met een expressieve kornetsolo, die qua atmosfeer veel weg heeft van een hymne. Een iets sneller middengedeelte werkt toe naar een verandering van toonsoort en een grootse terugkeer van de openingsmelodie, deze keer getoonzet voor de complete band. Na een emotioneel hoogtepunt wordt de muziek kalmer van sfeer en mondt ze uit in een rustig slot.

Das Stück beginnt mit einem ausdrucksvollen Kornett-Solo in der Art eines Kirchenliedes. Ein etwas schnellerer Mittelteil führt zu einem Tonartwechsel und einer ausführlichen Rückkehr der Anfangsmelodie, die nun von der gesamten Brass Band gespielt wird. Nach einem emotionalen Höhepunkt beruhigt sich die Stimmung und mündet in einen ruhigen Schluss.

Sanctuary est une commande de l’ensemble néo-zélandais Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass, qui l’a interprétée en tant qu’œuvre libre « contemplative » au Championnat national de brass bands de Nouvelle-Zélande 2018. La pièce s’ouvre avec un solo de cornet expressif évoquant un hymne. Un passage central un peu plus rapide mène un changement de tonalité avant un retour majestueux la mélodie du début, cette fois faisant appel l’orchestre entier. Après un climax chargé d’émotion, la musique s’apaise pour aboutir une conclusion sereine.

De componist heeft getracht een impressie te geven van het dorpsplein waar de jeugd zich verzamelt. In vier delen neemt hij ons mee door zijn woonplaats. 1. Folkdance - Momenten van opgewektheid, zorgeloosheid en optimisme 2. SundayAfternoon - de rustdag muzikaal weergegeven 3. Hide'n Seek - tijd voor sport en spel 4. Saturday Night - de geluiden van de zaterdag klinken ook door op het plein.

Glitter and glamour, good-looking people, a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However, reality proves to be different : as a rule, a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen.
A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making, and he incorporated them into ‘On the Movie Set’ .

In the first part, ‘The Clapboard’, a ‘director’s assistant’ is supposed to shout “Quieton the set’” and “Action!”, as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently, in order to create the right atmosphere, the clacking of a ‘Clapboard’ should be heard.
During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background, so romantic music is of course heard in the next part, ‘Love Scene’.
At the end of a long working day ‘It’s a wrap’ is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed.

Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar.....

Perf. Note:
The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ‘On the Movie Set’. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ‘opening night’!

‘Glamour’ en ‘Glitter’, mooie mensen, veel ‘bling bling’ en snelle auto’s. Zomaar een aantal zaken waar we aan denken als het om de filmwereld gaat. Maar voordat de film klaar is voor de bioscoop moet er doorgaans hard gewerkt wordentijdens het draaien op de filmset.
Een bezoekje op een filmset inspireerde John Emerson Blackstone tot het schrijven van ‘On the Movieset’. Hij zag een aantal zeer karakteristieke attributen en hoorde kreten die hij verwerktein deze compositie.

In het eerste deel: ‘The Clapboard’, is het de bedoeling dat de assistent van de regisseur ‘de bekende kreten’ (Quiet on the set of And Action!) roept, voordat er een take opgenomen wordt. Daarnamoet natuurlijk met een ‘Clapboard’ geklakt worden.
Bij een ‘Love Scene’ hoort uiteraard sfeerverhogende romantische muziek. Want zwijmelen bij een film gaat nu eenmaal niet zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van eenlange dag klinkt altijd ‘It’s a wrap’. Dit betekent dat het laatste shot van de dag gemaakt is.

Nu maar hopen dat er een oscar in het verschiet ligt.

Het gebruik van de juiste rekwisieten zalde uitvoering en waardering van ‘On the Movieset’ ten goede komen. Een rode loper en een chique ontvangst zullen uw gasten een echt ‘premi?re’ gevoel geven.

Arctic Funk might just as well have been a flashing sequel to a scene from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.
Popular music but with a difference, as indicated by the title.
The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout.
The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life.

The Composer: In Arctic Funk you might get a feeling of a party that takes place betweenice-rocks and snow-capped mountains.

Arctic Funk kan net zo goed een flitsend vervolg op een sc?ne uit de West Side Story van Leonard Bernstein zijn.
Populaire muziek, maar met een verschil, zoals aangegeven door de titel.
Afgewisseld door een rustig gedeelteis het volop actie.
Het werk werd geschreven in 1991 voor Troms? Brass. Troms? is een van de noordelijkste steden van Noorwegen, net boven de poolcirkel. Topografisch de stad komt waarschijnlijk over als ijskoud, maar Troms?is beroemd om zijn 'warme' nachtleven.
De componist: In Arctic Funk krijg je misschien het gevoel van een groot feest dat plaatsvindt tussen ijs rotsen en besneeuwde bergen.

Eternal father Strong to Save is a arrangement from the charale of the same name. This work is ideal for use in church services, however it also makes a useful warm-up piece or a quiet interlude in any concert.

Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms.
Obviously, the percussion section has a conspicious role to play, but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement.
The introduction depicts the awakening of nature, and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa.
The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana.
In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes.

Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'.

Carl Wittrock's brede interesse voor de wereldmuziek resulteerde in dit op originele Afrikaanse ritmes gebaseerde concertwerk.
Het slagwerk speelt uiteraard een opvallende rol, maar ook het orkest kan zich op een heerlijke manieruitleven.
De inleiding schildert het ontwaken van de natuur, welke overgaat in een dans. Het motief van deze dans (Apollo) is afkomstig uit Gambia. De begeleiding bestaat uit een ostinaatpatroon van de balafon-meester MaudoSusa.
De basis van het rustige middendeel is gelegen in het ritme van de Gigbo, een traditionele dans uit Ghana.
Het laatste deel (met enige gelijkenis met The Lion King) maakt gebruik van het zogenaamde Kono ritme.
Hetwerk komt het best tot zijn recht als er gebruik wordt gemaakt van djembes.

In 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' Scottish composer Bruce Fraser makes a sport of misleading his audience time and again. The title already indicates that this piece has been based on the well-known Carol 'Ding Dong Merrily on High', even if the melody makes a somewhat halting start. When it gathers pace, however, also due to the percussion section, suddenly various other carols may be recognized. Peace and quiet reign in the middle part, during which we can enjoy Bach's charming 'O Jesulein süss'. 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' ends in the same way it began, even if more and more Carols put in an appearance. Merry Christmas!

In 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' zet de Schotse componist Bruce Fraser de luisteraar op humorvolle wijze regelmatig op het verkeerde been. De titel geeft al aan dat het werkje gebaseerd is op het de bekende carol 'Ding Dong merrily onhigh' , al komt de melodie wat moeilijk op gang. Als het lekker begint te lopen, mede dankzij het slagwerk, komen er plotseling verschillende carols om de hoek kijken. Het middendeel vormt een rustpunt. Hier kunnen we genieten vanhet lieflijke 'O kindeke klein' van de grote Bach. 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' eindigt op dezelfde wijze zoals het begon, al komen er steeds meer carols op visite. Merry Christmas!

In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. Written as a testpiece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. A great work for the concert stage!

In deze fraaie compositie zijn melodiefragmenten uit de hymne Beecher omgevormd tot een reeks variaties, waarbij de melodie wordt gepresenteerd in verschillende stemmingen, van rustig en zacht tot vrolijk en triomfantelijk tegen het slot. Beecher Variations, dat is geschreven als verplicht werk voor de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2015, bevat uitdagende solopartijen voor cornet, sopraancornet, bugel en euphonium. Een weergaloos werk voor het concertpodium!

In diesem schönen Werk werden melodische Fragmente des Kirchenlieds Beecher in eine Reihe von Variationen verwandelt, welche die Melodie in verschiedenen Stimmungen von ausdrucksvoll über ruhig und leise, strahlend bis zu strahlend undtriumphal präsentieren. Als Pflichtstück in der 4. Division für die Holländischen Brass-Band-Meisterschaften 2015 geschrieben, enthält die Musik anspruchsvolle Solopartien für Cornet, Soprancornet, Flügelhorn und Euphonium. Ein großartiges Werk fürdie Konzertbühne!
